I havent been using alot of bait this season, because frankly it hast been worth the money because there are not many fish around. As you guys know, eggs and sand shrimp are pretty expensive considering the amount you receive. Ive heard Prawns(deep water shrimp) are good to use for steelies. Do any of you use prawns consistantly? If so, how do they compare to other baits(eggs,s.shrimp)?? Are they a good low water bait?
seems to me they are pretty cheap in the seafood sections and you get alot more. 5$ per pound or something.
Any info would be appreciated =)

Prawns work well for me!!I use them in low water conditions also. What I do is cut them down the middle and peal the shell off thread one end over the hook and through your bait loop them put your hook through again I put a small curl in it and you get excellent movement that way.Try it they WORK!!TM

That is all I have used for 10 or 15 years. Cheap raw prawns. usually the 50 count. When they go on sale I buy a pound or two and bag them in small freezer bags and freeze them. About 6 or 8 to a bag. I don't even thaw them out prior to fishing. Just pull a piece off, about the same size as your corky, hook and egg loop it. The water thaws them out instantly. Steelies, springers and chums hammer them.

I should add that I throw them back in the freezer after a days fishing. They will last several thaws.

Dye the prawns up too. Fish chunks of dyed pink prawn, and hold on. Prawns are also a good edition to a rag or aerofly.

Don't forget to pour off your excess egg juice leftover from curing and use that to soak your prawns in. Just don't eat them after doing that because the egg juice makes them tastle like crap!!

I always pack some prawns with me. It helps to switch bait. Got some chinook and coho eggs out of the freezer. Just need to pick up some sand shrimp on the way.

Not only are prawns cheaper than sandshrimp or eggs, they stay on your hook better, and of course the steelies love them.

Another thumbs up for prawns ... under rags in dirty water, tippin' jigs in clear water ... still have to say a I like shrimp better as a drifted bait under very low water.

Thanks for all the reply's. Im gonna give them a shot before my favorite river shuts down later this month. What kind of dye should i use? Procure, or just old food coloring? Eggs are great to have but they are such a mess to use. All my rods and reels are caked in dried egg goo...lol Sand shrimp are good but they die so damn fast after purchasing and they arent that durable. ah hah... Prawns - Looks like a winner. hehe
