I have the opportunity to be the the Anchorage/Seward area weekend of June 29 and would like suggestions on whether to fish saltwater or rivers....Combat fishing isn't my style...any help?

Russian River sockeyes are peaking. To avoid the zoo, walk downstream on either side of the Kenai. If the salmon are in the Russian, walk upriver.

A littel too early for the silvers out of Seward. Russian confluence is THE definition of combat fishing ... a little less crowded if you move out into fringe areas, but still not a wilderness experience. The smaller streams will be closed that late, but most of the folks should be gone from the Crooked Creek area on the Kasilof then (there's a reason why too ... bank opportunities are much grimmer then) so that would be an option for you. Not the greatest time to try it, but there will be a few kings available w/o too much in the way of crowds. Also, watch the sonar counts I'll have available on the site ... sometime around then we'll usually see an early good push of reds in the Kasilof as well that may provided decent fishing with far fewer people than the Russian area.

Gofor: That is a pretty good time for Halibut if you like that fishing. There are some skiff rentals and a ton of charter guys if you like guided fishing. Also, we use to fish dollies below Skilak Lake out of Kenai, but I'm not certain if that is still open. You may be a little early as we normally did that in August after the reds were spawning. The Russian is a Mega-zoo, so if you don't like combat fishing, don't even consider it. There are some opportunities on the streams north of Anchorage, but not familiar enought to help you there. If you get on the Alaska F&G web site, you can e-mail a fisheries guy in the area you are interested in. My experience is that they have been very helpful and fairly prompt in answering questions and providing information. Good Luck and enjoy Alaska.

combat fishing is hard to avoid in Alaska.Your best bet would be to head to the valley,and fish the creeks off the parks highway.The end of june is right around the peak of the king run in the valley.You can avoid the crowds by walking the creeks up or down,or have a air boat run you down and do a drop off,best creek for that is the willow.
