Beer on the fishing trip: Taboo or part of the fishing vest? My thoughts: If I am banking it, a couple beers in the vest seem ok, packing out the garbage of course. In the boat? Same deal, just more beer. Anyone with me, or am I kicked out now? Thoughts? Figure this would be as hot of a topic as the nets...

Man, am I tired of pack'n out your friggn' cans. Each trip to the river I fill up my vest with 5 or 6 beer cans! Maybe you clean up after yourself, but most don't. I say leave the beer for after the trip.

I pack out EVERYTHING I bring and any other trash I see on any trip I take to the river. I prefer bottles anyway, flame easy guys, just a question.

A couple brews in the boat while fishing Sturge is perfect, but I never drink the browns while hiking a river. Hikeing a Km (that's Canadian for .66 of a mile) with 2 Litres of beer in the gut ain't fun..

Fishing is ment to be a good time. Fish or no fish. I say bring a few beers if you like. Just make sure to pack them out. Hike the canyons do some fishing sit down with your fishing partner and have a cold one. Life can not get much better.

Drinking before and while walking long distances, no thanks. Drinking in the boat, well how else you going to get enough nuts up to run a 3" riffle thats 8 feet wide. No really though, a few beers or a lot of beers just be responsible and pack out the trash. Some days it's few and some hot summer days boondogging the NF it's many... Depends on how good fishing is..

I personally drink very little (maybe a 1/2 cs. a year if that) and never while fishing. I don't care if people around me like to have a few as long as they stay in control and pack it out.
1 thing I noticed while guiding was that in most cases, the more a person consumed, the fewer fish they put in the box.

When I'm in the boat I usually bring along a 3 liter jug of MCMENNAMIN'S HAMMERHEAD. Best ale ever! Got a kegerator in the garage so it doesn't cost a fortune to drink good beer.

None for me when fishing as my reaction time is bad enough. Plus none period if I got to drive.
I save it for when my day is done and I'm kickin back with memories of the day.

I bank fish about 90% of the time, and I'm usually in by 7:00, out by 1:00 or sooner. Too early for me to be hitting the brews. Heck, I usually leave a half cup of coffee in the cup holder of my car. Beer sounds nasty at 8:00 a.m., doesn't it?

On a float, though, well, that's different, especially if it's sunny.

A few beers in the boat or walking on the bank is a good thing. As long as whom ever is operating the boat or is driving home keeps their wits about them, no harm done.

I never drink while banking it. I do like to kill off a couple cold ones on those nice warm days while summer steelhead fishing in the boat. There are some rivers I will bring beer on and there are some I wont.
Now in the winter time a snort off the bottle of Crown Royal can warm you right up. When I brought my Drift Boatt home from the dealer the first 2 addd ons were a bottle of Crown Royal and a roll of butt wipe.
When Im fishing out of a power boat I do not drink. I seem to hit enough logs and rocks while sober. ( Sorry Dad )

ya cant even see the bottom of the boat there's so many cans. The game warden never seems to impressed though.

I usually don't drink unless I'm alone or with somebody. But if I were to drink beer on the river I wouldn't have any time for fishing as beer goes right thru me. And If I had chest waders on it is always a race to see if I get them off before I piss my pants. OlD Man

A few brews while trolling or anchored up is cool. Just don't try it at tillamook bay, or around St. Helens, Ore. You may end up doing a "field sobriety test" How you gonna pass one of those in boat

Hmmmmmm....I thought beer was standard equipment in any boat....rods, tackle, PFDs, beer. During the cold of winter I prefer a snifter to keep warm plus it takes up less pocket space when I'm banking it.

I say do what you want as long as:

1) You clean it up
2) You can handle it (it shouldn't make you more likely to fight or act rude to someone)
3) You don't act like a beligerant a$$ in front of my (or anyone elses) wife or kids who may be fishing with me (see number 2)
4) You don't compromise anyone's safety - includeing yours (i'd prefer to not have to do a rescue attempt while I'm out enjoying the river)

So if it increases your enjoyment and does not negatively impact anyone elses - go for it!

Be careful and respectful of others and there should be no problems with a few cold ones. But then how many of us have had to deal with some drunk a$$ at the boat ramp or on the river. I've met my share and it takes the glow off an otherwise good day.

We usually don't drink on Travel Days or when fishing particularly exciting drifts.

Hey guys and gals, thanks for all your input, but it is not like I am having an intregrity check or guilt trip, just thought I would mix up the board a little bit. I bring 2, maybe 3 in the vest with me on the bank, never get wild, and pack out all my garbage. I don't have a boat yet, but the flask sounds like a good idea, just to warm up the lower half of the waders, ya know? Although sometimes I feel like the guy above about trying to decide if I can get the waders down fast enough before pissin them, ha. Fish on, and if I got one left in the vest, your more than welcome to it.

I might have one if I'm on the oars. But Timber he tries to have enough so when we get to the recycle station we can melt it down for a new boat

I just don't like to when I'm fishing> When I'm done for the day then it's all right to have a few. And since I haven't fished for a while. I could go on and on but it would all be the same. I say if a person has any kind of problem with drinking too much or think they might overdo it if the alcohol is available, they should limit the amount they bring or not bring it at all.

I don't see a peoblem with a couple of beers. I usually don't drink any unless i am on a long boat ride. My vest is way to packed to carry beer, I already have to cary a small back pack also when I am bank fihing

I dont know want it is about camping and fishing, but its never to early to suck down a cold one. I like to crack them open about 7:30am
Even if the fishing stinks, its still fun to sit in the sun, listen to a ballgame and knock a few back.

Been there...Done that!!!! Now I just take great Allann Bros. coffee and am Much more receptive to the subtle takes. As a side benefit...don't have to worry about the drive home. Oh yeah!

I heard somewhere that it is now illegal to drink while boating. Can't remember whether it was OR or WA. Anybody else hear that???

I love to pull a cork as much as anybody. Except for the occasional beer when fishing slows and the sun gets warm, I usually keep it for after the trip. I have enough trouble with my aging reaction times without help from the brewmaster. Then again, there was this one time last year at fall chinook camp when my buddie took two of us and our 3/4 empty box of merlot out to pull wigglies on the evening tide. You should have seen my net job. But that was a once a decade exception, and I'm still apologizing to people :p

You need beer to wash down the doughnuts. The leftover warm part of it cleans and removes the egg stains/odor fairly well.

90% of the time i am on the oars. If i am floating easy water then i may toss back a few. If their are some hard stretches ahead of me no way. I'll save the drinking for camp then

what is all this 1/2 case stuff where we come from it is a 1/2 rack and as far as walking the bank or in a boat if you can come up with a better way to celabrate catching a 20 Lb steelhead be my guest. But for me its a budlight and lots of them that the fisherman way. just make sure if you drink more than 1 an hour some one else drives home.

Sounds like personal preference to me. It's really not my business, as long as I am not affected by it. I am however, affected and offended by cans and bottles left behind and by loud, offensive, and careless fellow sportsmen. I rarely, if ever have alcohol on board. I can guarantee you all that I have never left a can or a bottle behind. For those of you that feel that they just cannot make it through 6 hours on the river without "knocking down a few" I am truley sorry. But admit it! It won't get left on the bank if it is not brought there in the first
place. My vote...leave it at home. It will be there when you get back...I promise!

Never during...I have enough trouble keeping on my feet without being under the influence. Hot day, long hike out...cold one hits the spot.

Hey haverodwillfish I have yet to see you drink a beer in my boat. Oh I forgot that is because you are always to hung down from the night before. Ah this summer will be good beer drinking weather when you get back and you can have as many as you want in my boat. I have a big dumpster to through away the empties. Looking forward to sucking back a couple of cold ones with you when you return. But as far as everyone else goes it is a free country and if you want to drink and fish then shall be it. Just pack out your trash. I get tired of stopping on the river and cleaning up everyone elses trash.

If I remember right, YOU were the one who told me to bring the Guiness, but declined to have one when offered, and yeah, so I yacked over the side of your boat, I still caught 2 that day and kept you 100% in your "100% hole" Say, how is that thermos and lunch box working out for ya?

It is working just fine. Keeping the coffee good and hot and the beer nice and cold. The natives are finally starting to show up. One of the indians got 12 over 20lbs yesterday on the Quilayute. Just makes me sick to see them kill those trophies for 50 cents a pound.

I'm with Pat.Drinking is a personal preference but every time I hike in to my local river I pack out about a dozen other so-called anglers trash Pick it up!

Help set example by not drinking on the water.
I'm a purest, the fishing is more enjoyable when
one is sober. Altered state is not necesary while
fishing. I like the natural buzz I get with friends and the environment. Alcohol is a powerful addictive thing. A lot of people can't
get by without it. I am tired of witnessing the
stupidity of intoxication while in a puplic space
like the fishing hole. Bill W thank you for being
there for those that would like to experience life
without the crutch called alcohol. Snagging and
public drinking can be equaly anoying. Both are
not good on the eyes and are very shady at best.
Keep the cans at home away from the serenity of
the beautiful streams we love to experience. Not
trying to flame just trying to get consideration.
There are all sorts of places to go drink other
than with fisherman who fish to be away from it.

This is my first post, and what agreat subject to start with. Roadies (BEER) go hand in hand with camping and fishing.....Just keep the fun in check. It's no fun to get up for the morning bite with the feeling that a big cat must have pooped in your mouth, and beat your head on the ground.

For the jerks that leave the trash on the side of a river, they need to feel like the guy with the soar head and the cat poop in their mouth.
