Sea Lion Thieves!!

I was out at Possession Thursday and there was the biggest bait ball I have ever seen. It must have been a hundred yards wide and at least 2 miles long. Within 5 minutes of getting my line out I have a silver on. After about 5 minutes playing the fish I have him alongside the boat. I have my net to the water and my rod held up when a !@##$%^^& Sea Lion comes up from under the boat and clamps onto my fish! I thought the thing was going to take me with the fish. After losing about 50 yards of line I knew it wasn't going to let go so I had to cut my whole rig off. If you were out there Thursday, I was the guy yelling and cussing down at the water.
After I rigged up another flasher and Coho Killer I got another Silver on within minutes. The fish took of accross the surface jumping and spinning the whole way. While I'm trying to force the fish in as fast as I can, another @#$%^&*^^%$#$ Sea Lion surfaces and takes my fish again! This one snapped my leader off and sat there thrashing around munching on my fish.
By the end of tha day those were the only 2 keepers I had on and the Sea Lions got them both. After getting my boat onto the trailer at the Everett launch, I notice my trailer connector wires are hanging down from my trailer. Someone had stolen my adapter off of my truck.
What a day.

Jeez, and it wasn't even the 13th yet. Wonder what's in store for you today?
Sorry to hear your plight, but I did laugh at the story.

Shoot the sealions! I'll probably get into trouble for that, but what the hell.

I for one have never had a fish stolen by a sea lion but would find it pretty funny if it happened. It's just a fish guys and it adds to the adventure. You mean you honestly did not laugh you arse off when that happened. I would have been in the bottom of the boat rolling with laughter. Fishing is only what you make of it, so have fun. My buddy fishes in Florida and has had Crocks take his red fish they can go 30 miles an hours running on the surface of the water using the tale as a motor. Now that would be cool to see.

I've had it happen a couple of times and fishing gear is expensive, so it wasn't that funny. I know some guys that don't go fishing without a .22. wouldn't be so bad if a guy didn't lose his rigging. guess that's why its fishing not catching.

Sure is frustrating, especially when fishing is tough.
We have noticed that the seals seem to key on the net being "out". Suggest that leaving the net low and in the boat until the fish is ready reduces the notice the seal has which boat has dinner. Not perfect but helps.

I have to agree with you Smalma, I lose on avg. 12 fish a year to sealions and I know that # would be much higher if I had my net waving, unless its a slow day, I gaff any king under 25 lbs. and every silver. Most times I too think it is pretty funny to see it happen but there are exceptions, slow days and/or big fish, I know of 2 guys that have lost kings over 50 lbs. to sealions, witnessed 1 of them. This is all in Alaska, down here I have yet to lose any to sealions and I probably wouldn't really care if I did.
