This summer, we had the privelage of taking our blow up s*x pig on Captain Bills Halibut boat at Anchor Point. After striking up a meaningless relationship with my pig, Captain Bill shared some "Squaw Candy" with us, and it was killer.

Form what I remember, it was thin strips of sockeye that had been cold smoked for a couple of days, and it was very sweet. Can anyone share a brine recipe, and how to smoke this stuff?

I don't have a smoker, and was thinking about getting a Little Chief. Any ideas guys.

As a sidebar, our salmon are in the rivers in full force. Lots and Lots of crusty 15 to 25 pound boots with white moldy spots on them. It closely resembles a lepper family reunion. The banks are lined with guys fishing shoulder to shoulder, and lots of moldy fish heading up the bank to be smoked. YUK

Another couple weeks, and those big fall run browns (up to 25 pounds) and our winter steelies will start piling in the rivers. We just need lots of rain, and some colder water. If I hammer a big toadie brown, I'll post a pic for your viewing pleasure.

Hey Hawk .. Drop me an email with a shipping addy and we'll repay the pig supply (we're still eating bacon smile ) with a care package for you, hint, hint ...

True squaw candy is more air-dried than smoked ... it actually takes several weeks to do and the humidity needs to be somewhat low for it to work well. I don't have a recipe myself ... Deep Creek packing makes it for you though, so on your next AK trip, so can have a bunch of reds done smile

Hi Jerry. Just been hangin low. Spent quite a bit of time in September trying to whack a bear with my bow, but came up empty handed. First time in many many years. Combination of very hot weather, and lots of hazel brush in the woods, had Bruno coming to baits late at night, but a no show during the daylight hours. Oh Well they'll just be a little plumper for next year.

The next couple of months will be very hectic. Taking off tonight on a 5 day bowhunting trip for whitetails in South Dakota, followed by a 4 day stint in Wisconsin for fall brown fishing, then back to South Dakota for a couple of days pheasant hunting, then home for geese, then off to Iowa for the pheasant opener, then out to Nebraska for deer, and capping it off with a week of winter steelheads on Lake Michigan , then Muzzleloader deer hunting on the North Shore of Lake Superior.

My wife is looking for a nice man, who spends less time in the water/woods than I do, as a potential long term partner. She is a great woman, and has to be to put up with my crud in the fall. I'd be willing to split utlities, mortgage, etc. All I'm asking is that you keep the noise down while I sleep, and don't take half of my stuff. eek eek

Bob: I'll shoot you an e-mail next week when I get back form South Dakota. :p smile

1/2 cup kosher salt to 2lb's dark brown sugar.
Brine for 24 to 36 hours then cold smoke with natural alder wood, just smoke no heat it takes a couple of day's.I don't think you'll get the true candy from a little chief or big chief. You will need a smoker fueled with a wood burning stove.Good luck,
