I was reading over yesterdays outdoor page in the Tacoma news tribune and came across this... Last week during a spawning ground survey on the north fork of the Lewis river, a biologist came across a spawned coho that measured 38 inches in length and about the same measurement for it's girth (WOW)! based on the evidence estimated live weight 30 pounds, that is more than 3 inches in length longer than the current state freshwater record and damn near 12 inches thicker, now thats a football I want to play with. I realize that its steelhead season but this reminds me of how much fun my partner and I have had chasing around the great coho runs we've been spoiled with the past few seasons. The records were falling and we got one around 23lbs the fall before last, chrome bright 23lb buck with the biggest hooknose i've seen, beautiful fish. Anybody else come close to the record? beer

Was at the Lewis River hatchery yesterday and had my cousin show me all the new stuff they got goin on (has worked with fisheries for 13 year). Anyhow he took me into the freezer room and showed me a 53 pound chinook caught by a worker at the hatchery on 8 lb leader 12lb main. Anyhow he also showed me a 23 pound hooknose coho that was very big and fat. It was a clipped fish and I am sure the dorsal fin weighed 2lbs alone. It was a big one. Of course both these fish were hung and frozen solid side by side. Their final count for early and late returning coho was 99,500 this year. Pretty damn good numbers. Summer steelies was at 13,300. Just a little FYI. Well take it easy. beer

I HOLD THE CURRENT WASHINGTON RECORD COHO FOR FRESHWATER AT 36" X 25" GIRTH. IT WEIGHED 25.25 POUNDS. A 38 " GIRTH SEEMS TO BE A BIT MUCH.
