About a month ago, I cured up a nice batch of eggs using pro-cure, put them in a ziplock bag and tossed them in the fridge.

The other day I was heading out to the river and when I took the eggs out, I noticed that there was some mold (not a lot) growing on them. Not sure what happened. When drying, I even tented a piece of paper over the top to keep dust and mold spores off. confused

But, what my question is, are these eggs still okay to fish? Should have lasted a lot longer then a month. confused

No matter how careful you are, after about a month, they all seem to show some surface mold. Not to worry, they always still seem to fish fine.

That's why whenever I plan on not using eggs within a month, they hit the freezer wink

I've been told by more than one person that a lil bit o mold won't hurt.

I believe that most commercial cures contain anti-fungal (anti-mold) ingredients apparrently, too much anti-fungal stuff actually repells fish instead of attracting them.

Anyone else ever use eggs that had a lil mold on em (after scrapin it off)? How did they work?

Sincerely,
Roger

Next time try a jar .Leave about 1/2 inch at the top, drop in a small piece of burning wax paper then put the lid on while the paper is still burning. This removes all the oxygen and prvents the mold.eggs done this way have lasted up to a year for me. thumbs

Haven't used moldy eggs so I can't answer that question but I can offer some advice on keeping that from happening. I use a vacuum packer, the Costco variety, and have had vacuum packed eggs last for over a year looking just like the day they were packed without freezing. Don't put too much of a vacuum on them though or you'll implode some of the eggs. After you vacuum pack them just put em in a cool dark place to store.

if you're going to vacuum pack cured eggs, put them in your bag, freeze them, then seal them to prevent bursting the eggs

When using or selecting baits I always think " would I eat that if I were a fish?" If the answer is no then toss them. Maybe if you lightly washed them and placed some shrimp oil on them that can be salvaged.

WOW I am not the only quack that thinks this way. I look as some stuff and say "DAMN, that looks good and make a chomping sound" My wife thinks I am nuts but it works. Glad to see I am not the only mental one with this thought pattern.

Last week I caught a winter run and lost another using eggs that had mold on them at one time or another. I don't think the mold does anything to mask the natural scent of the eggs.

i have fished moldy pro glow eggs when i had no other bait. I dont think it mattered to much. I tried to cut most of the mold off when I cut my bait to size. I camp for two weeks, and my bait allways ends up with a little mold if its not frozen, and just left on ice. I switched to pro glow over pro cure, and love it.
