The spinning rod blank I'm looking for doesn't seem to exsist. I want to build a 2pc, 6.5' to 7',UL spinning rod. I've looked in a few catalogs, and all I can find in a longer blank is 1pc models. What do you think of using a fly rod blank for this use? I asked a tech at Pac-Bay,and he said it would void the warranty, but didnt know how well it would work. In spinning rod terms, what would a 2wt fly rod be? Would it be UL or will it have more power, than I'm looking for?

Hope this all makes sense. Thanks.

I think a 2wt will make a real nice UL trout rod. Fly rod blanks have a pretty slow action but should be perfect for light line on a spinning rod. I have seen fly rod blanks used before and they turn out pretty nice in my opinion.

What weight lures and leads will you be fishing??...you may want an UL action but in some cases anything more then the tiniest spinner will be a little much for a #2...I would look for a quick little #3 instead.

Sparkey,
I will be fishing real small spoons and spinners. I want to use it for some hike in lakes this summer. That's why I want a longer 2pc rod. Longer,so I can get a little more on the cast, 2pc so I can break it down for the hike in. I don't think any of the lure's I'll be using will weigh more than 1/8oz. And 4lb test is as big as I'll fish. Is a #3 still considered an UL,or is it more like an extra light?
Thanks.

I know of several people who have built spinning rods on fly rod blanks and have heard of many others. Works well from what I understand. I've got a couple of old fly rods, on which the wraps were comin undone, in storage that I plan to do the same thing with as soon as I return to Washington. Can't imagine why it would affect the warranty tho?!!

Sincerely,
Roger

I have personally built two trout rods from fly blanks. A matched set, one for me and one for the wife...

I used the St. Croix SCIV 7'6" fly rod blank... I believe it is a 3 or 4 weight... They are absolutely awsome... teamed up with the smallest shimano 500 I could find...

a 6" trout will rip your face off!!! <img border="0" alt="[eat]" title="" src="graemlins/eat.gif" />

I've landed trout as big as 5 lbs... whoo hooo!

I wouldn't go to much lighter than 3 or 4 weight with the St Croix blanks. The tip dia is pretty small as it is. plus, the single foot spin guides are quite a bit heavier the the traditional fly snake guides so the rod will soften up quite a bit.

I know you guys are talking about building one, but FYI Browning makes a sweet little 7' UL spinning 2 pc rod . Its the Syntec IM6, rated for 2-6 lb. and 1\16-1\4 oz. I fish mine with a stradic 2000. It has the reel seat toward the back, so with a small spinning reel like the shimano it all balances-out nice. The cork in front is a full 2 hand-width's long. The one I have will cast a mile, and its a trout catching sono***un. Makes those E.washington bow's feel like a hot steelie, a real hoot. And about $50 if I remember......... thumbs

St. Croix makes a 3S70ULM2 blank that is really nice, I also have there older SCIV UL in 7' that is alot faster action. I also built a SCIV 7'9" 3 wt. for a friend of mine, (spinning rod on a fly blank) that was very much UL action. He thought the rod didn't have enough back bone thou. Something you might want to look at is a travel rod, 3 piece rod. Everyone makes them, St. Croix 3FT664 $67.00. I think I'd go with the 3wt. before the 2wt. Another thing you could do is go visit some fly shops. Jon

Now I can't say much about the wt of the fly rod but I know a few people that make some killer bobber rods for steelhead using fly rod blanks. But them are like 9 to 12 foot bobber rods and they are using fly rod blanks so.
