When I bought my boat and trailer last April, I knew going into it that the trailer was going to need some attention. After spending a lot of time getting the boat just the way I like it, it's now time to work on the trailer.
After inspecting the trailer brakes, lines, master cylinder, hubs, etc. It looks like I need to replace everything. I haven't opened the drums up yet, I fear if I do, I'd never get everything put back together due to massive amounts of rust and corrosion.
I've been doing a lot of searching on the web for parts/kits and I'm considering doing it myself. I've seen drums kits as well as stainless disc brake kits for boat trailers. Any opinions on this?
Am I nuts to do this myself or should I take it to a shop? I've gone as far as pricing new trailers, but I'm guessing this would be a cheaper alternative.

Talk to the people at 6 ROBLES. I believe there is one in SEATTLE (near Tukwilla), and one in FIFE (or TACOMA). They are trailer experts and carry all the parts you would need.

I'm doing the same thing, only my axle already "smoked" the last time that I used it. I'll be talking to a place in Everett off Broadway tomorrow called Six Robbless (not sure of the spelling). Should be the same company as suggested above. They were recommended by Boaters world. Boater's World wasn't able to help me much due to severe rust on the brake drum. Looks like I will be buying a new hub assly with bearings inside as a minimum.

I recommend these guys:

Champion Trailer Parts Supply

I've installed two complete brake kits from these guys, one drum and one disk, and both kits were top-notch. I don't know if they are price-competitive, though.

I second what KB says...The Tie Down Mfg brakes can be had as a complete assembly so retrofitting in place of the rusty drum brakes is realatively easy. I have a King trailer with 6 of these stainless disc brakes and they work very well. Tie Down is also a great customer service oriented company if you ever need help as I did once. My experience was excellent.
