I have been fishing on the sound and in the ocean my whole life, in the last two years I have really tried to improve my skills. Blackmouth in the winter isnt enough to satisfy my addiction so I picked up river fishing. I have gotten a couple fish and its all I can think about!!! My wife is starting to get pretty upset. Any tips on how to balance my home life and fishing?

Well, speaking from experience.......

I try to knock out my Huney-do Scroll prior to the weekend.. and then I always invite her along.. bring the crab pots along (Red Rccks in the South Sound). Other trick... if you have kids, take them along too. That should provide a good little break for the wife.
(I like to load my daughter up on sugar before we get home. The I take a nap.)

I usually shoot for one day of hunting or fishing a weekend. On three day weekends I get to fish two days when she has to work!

If the rivers are blown out I make sure that I get the honey-doos taken care of during that time period, or make a special effort to do something with the wife and kids.

My wife has been taking classes to further her education on Satudays, so I get Dad duty. I usually try to do something fun with the kids, and fun for me. We can get out on nice days sometimes and fish a zipper from shore for a few hours. I alos make a point to get something done for her as well.

She does a lot of things in the evenings with her lady friends during the week, so we both get our "adult" time. Works pretty good so far, just remember to be fair, and it will pay you back many times over. remember one word. Consideration.

Here's a tip ..... it took me a long time to figure out that when I was going fishing with the family, I wasn't going fishing. Confused? I'll try to explain. When I'm fishing, I'm fishing...the whole world goes away. That didn't work for the kids or wife, so I had to tell myself (secretly) that "I'm taking the wife and kids fishing, or whatever else THEY want to do." While it's true that I was able to make a few casts, and occasionally catch a fish, if I kept in mind that the kids and wife came first, then I seemed to have a pretty good time even though I wasn't fishing the way I would normally like.

After a few trips of "family first", I found it much easier to REALLY go fishing without having to babysit the wife and kids, so to speak.

Good Luck.....it's a tough one. beer

I guess I got pretty lucky when I married my wife.

We were out sturgeon fishing shortly after we started going out.(Her 20' Predator) It was slow.Just a few shakers.I said "If you want to head in its o.k. with me" She about floored me with "I think its kinda early to be gettin off the river.Don't you?" I knew I had a keeper right then.

Doesnt matter what kind of fishin we're doin, shes game. Trolling for salmon,Anchorin with plugs, freedriftin with eggs, she's game.
And yes,she knows how to tie her own leaders, and even puts on her own eggs, smelt, shrimp herring or whatever were using.

I can always count on a good lunch,and a good time.No complaining.No time limits.

2-3 -4 days a week fishin, its not too much for her.She even takes her Mom.Another avid accomplished fishergal. On days I have to work.

So fortunately I dont have a problem with trying to justify my fishing time.(unless I do to much of it without her)

How could you ask for a better partner for fishing,or in life. laugh

I know this isnt any help to you.But just wanted to let you see whats possible. If for some reason she could learn to enjoy fishing as much as you do.In my case I never would have imagined that was a possibility. But there are some women out there that love to fish as much as us guys. beer

Get on the Atkins diet with her. This is the "hunt and fish" diet - never have too many pounds of meat and always have to go out and get more. And dang, can't help it, the state makes me release wild fish - sorry honey, not my fault I couldn't bring any home.... cry

Man, Carl that is harsh! My wife likes to go on the boat, but not for too long and not too early. That knocks her out of most of my trips. My son has recently come to live with us, he doesn't get along too well with anyone yet. He is popping tons of pills and has some real emotional problems pounded into him by his mom. So, I take him fishing every Saturday to get him out of the house and give my wife and daughter a break. Win/Win!!! hello hello

It's all about compromise,if you don't and you have kid's you will lose big time in more then one way. When the rivers are blown I make sure I make up and then some for the time I was gone fishin while it was prime time. This has worked for seven years now.It helps that I included her father in lots of my trips. She loves to fish but mostly in the summer for king's & coho in the salt and bouy 10.Good luck,
