Greetings-

I have a mid 70's 135 hp Johnson which needs double carbs rebuild and a new wiring harness installed. I can pick up a new wiring harness for $100, including coils, which I am told is quite the deal. If this was on the back of your fishing boat, would you shell out the $300 bucks and have this professionally done, or would you consider saving the couple thousand dollars required to buy a refurbished 70-115 hp engine?

Also, what annual maintenance is required on this outboard? Change lower unit oil?...Lube steering zerk fitting?...Lube the electrically actuated, hydryalliclly powered tilt?

Thanks to all you amateur mechanics out there.

Fishingking.

Save your fishing time and buy a Yamaha 4 stroke. Whatever you do for a living is probably more lucrative that dinking around for hours mechanicking on an old motor. You will be trading your fishing time for mechanic time - is it worth it, or is it worth borrowing the money, getting a reliable outboard that will last you for years and pay for itself over it's lifetime in gas and oil savings, and going fishing? We are only given so many hours on this earth - time spent fishing is not deducted, but time spent cussing an an old POS Johnson and raising your blood pressure is decucted double beathead

What are the best retail outlets to purchase a yamaha? Is it worth looking at the internet to make the purchase to save some money?

A boat dealer once told me that when you are talking about a large outboard motor it comes with a free boat attached.

If it were a 300 buck estimate, I'd give it a try if the engine were running well before this happened. Two strokes are pretty durable, if they have been well cared for.

You might lose $300 bucks, but you might save $2000. That's a pretty good risk return ratio.
