I landed a chrome hatchery hen today on the Kalama that was 36" long with a 20.5" girth. I figured it was over 15 but was wondering if anyone had a chart that would figure this out. Landed it on a nightmare jig in the canyon. Will post pics later. Thanks.

20.5x36=738x2=1476divided by 775=19.045161

Very nice fish.

FP, How does that equation work. the girth was 20.5 inches and the length 36.
20.5x36=738x2=1476divided by 775=1.9045. i assume you move the decimal one over to the right, but where did the 775 come from, is the 775 an independent variable. no matter how you look at it, its a nice fish, i heard that you minus 15 from the length to get a ball park figure

I looked at a differant calculator that I found and it puts that fish at 20.17 Really nice fish. This calculator is never more than a couple of oz. off what my digital scale says thats hy I use it.

I could guesstimate what the weight was when I caught it but wanted to get more of an exact weight and I didn't have a scale. I figured it to be about a solid 17 lbs. I never like to flirt with the 20 unless I'm absolutely sure it surpases it. I'll try to get a pic up today. Thanks for the help.

sturgio,

It is just a formula that I got somewhere a long time ago. I don't weigh many fish so don't know the auccuracy of it.

I guess you could divide by 77.5 to get the decimal in the right place. I knew someone would catch me on that... wink

It seems to be very close to the caculator that TRBO has installed into his pages.

36" would have to be quite fatter to get it into the 20 pound class. IMO

Anyway you look at it, a 36" Steelhead is a very nice sized fish!!!!

I've weighed 2 hatchery fish in the 36-36.5 inch range. Both were pretty stocky, though I'm not sure the girth was as large as yours. One weighed 16, the other 16.5. Yours was a nice fish for sure! beer

This was the weight calculator posted before, using the 775 divisor. It rounds to the nearest pound - kind of senseless to estimate fractions. You can print the .jpg - I carry one laminated in my tackle box. Wife and I have 3 (salmon) in the red (+50) zone.
