I do not know what the comparison between the merc and the johnson is but the year. There is no standard that says all 72 year 2 cycles use the same fuel ratio. That is entirely up to the manufacter and the oiling requirements of there engine.Do not take specs from an Evinrude and apply them to a merc.

I may be way off base, just trying to haed off any problems for ya later later.

Something to think about on that merc. Those mercs were design to opperate in the great lakes not our salt water.A big problem they have is the steel drive shaft rusting and siezing up at the powerhead and the lower unit.Makes it impossible to replace the water pump!Had to through one away that simply needed a water pump because of this.It is imperitive that the motor gets flushed ten times more than you think it should.I flushed mine religously and it still froze.

I have a mid-70's 9.8 hp merc. It's 50:1 as stated above.

Definitely flush the motor. Big problems with corosion inside the power-head as well. There are several very small passages in the powerhead where water needs to pass to keep the engine cool. They corrode shut quickly after salt water use. I have seen this problem on the only two mid-70s merc 9.8 powerheads I've ever looked at including my own. A real pain in the neck to clean. If the motor stops pissing water at higher speeds for no apparent reason this may well be the cause.

thanks all I thought 50-1 but needed some reassurence. before I sent my brother-in-law out with his "new" motor

Hey about the drive shaft problem I take all my outboards apart once a year just to greese the spline on top of the driveshaft I haven't had a problem with them for the past 8 years. but the 175hp is a bit of a pain to get back together right, mostly cause it's heavy.

thanks agian
