A river I'll never fish.

I especially like:

No snagging: With migrating salmon clearly visible in areas of the Quilcene River, some anglers may be tempted to resort to snagging. This is a violation of state fishing rules, except in the case of tribal anglers conducting subsistence fisheries. "Unless you're a member of a treaty tribe, you can expect a citation if we catch you snagging fish," Henry said.

This is a river I have never, and will likely never, fish. Judging from the past posts I have read, seems it would be better off closed.

Seems they have more of a right to eat than we do.......
I would actually be PO'd at all this special consideration crap if I were an indian. I catch plenty of fish to eat and I don't snag. I would think they thought I was less than they, or stupid if they made those kind of rules for me.

JMHO....

I guess I shall finally chime in on this issue...

This past weekend, I was driving from Sekiu to points south and my route took me right through downtown Quilcene.

There in the parking lot of the local school, there were 3 enforcment vehichles and 3 agents discussing whatever they were discussing.

Down south at Hoodsport, there were 2 agents (I should know as they came to lend me a hand after I was stung by a wasp, passed out and fell face first into those metal grate walkways over the fishways...and I had just stopped to take a peak at the scene).

Anyways, within 30 minutes are two terminal fisheries in which snagging and just all out blatant poaching occurs yet over here in Puget Sound we are dealing with not enough enforecement and our wild ESA-listed Puget Sound chinook are being targeted and poached!

IMHO, the least that could be done would be to close the Quilcene and move a couple of those officers over here when our rivers are filled with wild ESA-listed chinook.

It is much easier for one officer to patrol a closed river then for even a dozen officers to patrol an open river that resembles a zoo such as the Quilcene!

This busts me up man " three agents sitting at a school parking lot discussing what they are going to be doing" Good lord can I say it again with maybe even a little more umph, Get off your asses and patrol the damn river and quit sitting like the lazy bastrads you are talking about how your state patrol buddy got wasted and ran into a tree and got off because he belongs to the brotherhood. It reminds me of that filthy pig David Brain, the cops knew there was a problem knew how to fix it but what do they do, they ignore it until some body ends up dead. Well I hate to predict bad **** but a property owner is going to take matters into his or her own hands and lay their version of the smack down because agents are sitting around in parking lots playing patty cake.

Close the quil? The quilbillies will just load up the truck and head to the dungeness. (They'll feel right at home there) Closing rivers isn't the answer. Our rights are slipping away fast enough as it is. WDFW needs to quit whining about being under staffed and get out and start writing some tickets, take some rods, pull some licenses... and for gods sake, it doesn't take five to patrol hoodsport to quilcene.. IF they were to hire some "go getters"! Its OK for the oficers to actually get out of the car and get sneaky! Dont wear uniforms! DO SOMETHING! But stop closing rivers because its just too damn far to walk to catch a poacher.

Are people willing to pay higher taxes and/or pay more for licences to give the WDFW the funds to put more enforcement out there? If not, then quit whining.

Elk,

The Dungeness doesn't open till October right? By then the Quil is done. How would your scenario play out? I'm pretty sure that the Quilbillies and all of the other snaggers ALREADY mob the Dungeness.

Why is the perception that entire rivers are being closed? Can you name a river that has been closed due to snagging within the last 10 years? Terminal areas maybe, but the Quil is a unique situation in that the open fishing area is only about a mile long from the salt to the hatchery.

The wardens DO hike the river and conduct "undercover" ticketing operations on the Quil. The reason that the group of them were seen conversing in a school parking lot is probably because there's no fish yet and the mobs haven't arrived.

Last but not least, and this isn't directed at you specifically Elk, but to ALL who've been bashing the Wardens: Give it a freakin' rest! mad mad

I don't or haven't fished the Quill, but according to the sources I know and hear from the problem isn't from the Quillibillies on the Quill it's the outsiders that come in from out of the area who think they own the river and have no respect for anyone but theirselves and try to run rough shod over the locals.

It's the same story that I hear that's going on on Cowlitz and several other rivers in SW Washington.

ive seen plenty of "locals" trashing some of my favorite rivers, and ive seen plenty of "outsiders" fishing ethically and even carrying out someone else's trash when they leave.

it doesn't have anything to do with where you live.

A true sportsmen would not be interested in perpetuating these nasty snagfest as a sporting event. It has nothing to do with the "sport" of fishing.

ACT:

I agree with other who point out that it really doesn't matter who is doing the snagging. But I have witnessed many locals snagging on the Quill. Some seem to think it's okay because it "their" river.

It should be closed.

Jackiepoo. May I suggest an anger managment class? It's obvious something has you pretty dang mad at law enforcment in general.

I know several game wardens and I can tell you they are not lazy and they don't sit around playing patty cake.(Is it okay with you if they do some planning and coordinate their efforts? Do you know what they were discussing? I don't, but i am willing to give them the benfit of the doubt.)

They are often called out in the middle of the night, and often voluntarily work evenings, holidays and weekends. These are VERY hard working and dedicated men and women. I wish we had about twice as many of them!

You can bet that when some Quillbilly takes the law in their own hands the folks that will have to straighten out the mess will be our law enforcment officers.
