with the recent downpoors, would the fishn' be better below the barrier dam or below blue creek down to the toutle? I would think that after the small spike in water flow and the rainfall, the silvers would jet up to the dam. Do you think that dick nites would work good like on the snoho, or are these silvers a different strain of biters?

I haven't been down there lately, but I would think that the water up by the Dam would be in much better shape. The Toutle turns to chocolate milk pretty quickly.

Barriers water is good but the toutle-cowlitz confluence has been tremendous for silvers as well as the really nice springer I caught last sat night. I'll be there fri night and sat morning for sure. The hatchery has already recieved 5 springers and 275 silvers as of the 8th of oct, so the main push of silvers is just starting. Stop by and say hi, follow the cigar smoke!! Fish on!! Woodsy, Isnt that what this site is for,, reports,, I feel I do need a report cause I dont have alot of time to fish. Not getting a report would be like trying to fish the skagit with out knowing that it is flooded, Dont ya think?

Lots and lots of really balck chinook at the barrier monday.Quite a few people fishing for the ugly things too.I did see a very few silvers above the deadline.1 nice silver caught.
I would fish around the Toutle for the next week or so.The Toutle is pretty muddy but it dilutes in the Cow pretty fast.The Cow looked pretty fishable just a few hundred yerds below the mouth of the Toutle.And was in great shape on the Chapman road side.
I hear that throwing plugs (BW29) under the overhangig brush,and trolling them in the frogwater above the Toutle has been pretty productive.Plugs work all up and down the river with a cast and retrieve method. I fished for a few hours Mon. morn at the park below Castle rock.Saw several rollers but no biters.I tried eggs,jigs, different spinners.to no avail.I think the low pressure system(really windy) had something to do with the lack of a bite.
There are a few fish being caught all up and down the river,but I think for awhile your better off down low.The nets are in till the end of the month.When they come out things should really break loose in the whole system.
Dick Nites should work as does all the usuall hardware.Mepps and Blue fox spinners.Do a search on here about jig fishing and you should see a fantastic article Cowlitzfisherman wrote a few months ago.You would be amazed at how well they work after just a little practice. I also do good drifting eggs.For some reason I've had the best luck using big baits.And I like orange eggs as well or better than red eggs.Experiment around with scents also.Vanilla.anise,shrimp etc.I try to be prepared with a good assortment of stuff.You never know what they want.
Theres all kinds of bank access around Castle Rock if you look around a bit.
You might know a lot of this stuff,but thought I would throw in as much as i could before my fingers get tired from typing.
I agree with you that these boards are for sharing info,and I think Woodsy Waynes reply was pretty lame.I've seen him give and recieve good info in the past.So I'm a bit surprised.Hopefully it was just a bad day.

They are getting a ton of fish in there right now, but from what my buddy said they had lock jaw up at the barrier yesterday.

Just stopped at the park in Castle Rock.I dont know what happened since Monday but the river is really dirty.I'd stay above the mouth of the Toutle.What a change,Especially with this dry weather.
I know last weekend the Toutle was running brown instead of the usual gray.I figured there was a pretty good mudslide somehere.Maybe it broke loose and is letting the ashy silt run through now.

Fished it yesterday and found out they had released some water since Mon./Tues. thus the change. Noticed water level yesterday did start to drop again though. Hooked 8 landed 5 summer runs but don't need any smokers. Out of the 8, only 1 was a silver(about 12#) which cleaned my clock, fast water and 10# test don't mix very well with hot fish.I'll be prepared next time!
