Taking a Buddy Fishing Friday....

Greetings Folks - I have been lurking around here reading all the stories I can about your fishing adventures. I have truly enjoyed most of the threads and learned plenty from reading your posts. I made three excellent trips to Sekiu this year using things I learned on this web site. Thanks!
I figured I would ask those who fish what their suggestion(s) might be to take a buddy fishing. My bud used to live here about 8 years ago and is back here on business. We only have this Friday then he is on his way home back east. I would like to take him salmon fishing if I can find a location with a fair chance of getting into fish. He misses out on our fishing and longs to return to the Pacific Northwest.
Any suggestions on where to go?
I have a 21’ Striper and was thinking of putting in at Kingston to fish (Chums, Blackmouth?) Possession or maybe Point No Point. I had also thought of fishing Hoodsport from the water side for Chums, but the boat is difficult to get into without launching next to a float, and Twanoh State park has the floats pulled for the winter. I do not know if Triton Cove State Park has the floats in or not. It would be a long run down to Hoodsport but worth it if we got into fish. I know of no other launch with floats any closer to Hoodsport. Do you?
Your recommendations are most appreciated and thanks for your time

Mr. Lines, Good to have you aboard neighbor! I'd think that Kingston would be one of your better choices this weekend the way things are shaping up. Good blackmouth and some chum still around. The Nasty boys (late chum) ought to be showing up soon too. Keep us posted.

I'm with Mooch on this one. Kingston and Point No Point for Blackmouth! Just think shallow in the morning and deeper as the day goes on... I'd stay away from Hoodsport, those fish are probably getting pretty nasty by now. But then again I hate that place anyway...

Thanks for your reply. I fished Point No Point about three weeks ago with no luck. Darn fish were everywhere! Since I did not catch any, I am assuming they were chums. I have to learn how to target chums in the salt. I have caught lots of chum on a fly rod both in rivers and fishing off the beach. Fishing from the boat is somehow different for me.
Any recommendations on targeting chums?

Tight, Back at ya. Them chum were easy a couple of weeks ago when they were stacking. Simple set up. Whole herring, 3 oz. & 30 pulls on a nice easy troll. Wham. The trick is don't fish too deep and try to stay with the fish on the incoming. Head em off at the pass and troll across their lane from shore to the rips and back. Move when they do. Haven't been out last couple of weeks but chum should be thinning out now which makes it tougher. Drift mooch PNP before the low ebb at all depths for both BM and Chum. I like it in tight on the Chimney hole. If you don't see rolling fish, bag the chum and target the BM deep. For Blackmouth bang the bottom (Kingston's good too) with a candlefish type lure (like a dart), mooch herring deep or troll hoochies & spoons. If the herring balls are a little scarce, think candlefish. Hope that helps. Let us know if you make your buddy happy.

Good Morning Gents –
Well, you know the drill “best laid plans….” We did not get out due to the snow/ice conditions here in North Kitsap County. I did not think it was a good idea to tow the boat with the road conditions the way they were.
Sooooooo we had a long talk/visit and my bud said he really wanted to take a few fish home to smoke up (his wife likes smoked salmon during the holidays) when he returned home. So, I mentioned the Grovers Creek Salmon Hatchery as a possible place to pick up a few if they were in good shape. We got in the truck and went to the hatchery were they were giving away all the salmon you wanted. We picked out twelve of the best looking fish and returned to my place. We then set up two fillet stations and proceeded to fillet out the fish. One of the twelve was a silver. Man it was cold outside with the wind, water air temp being what they were. Anyway we completed the task at hand and he is returning home today with some fish for the smoker. As a side note, a few of the fish were still moving when we put them in the bag.
We would have preferred to catch the fish, but our window of opportunity was very small. My bud went home with twenty four fillets and a smile on his face. Not the best, but he has a few fish. I told him I was very interested in how well the fish smoke up. He said he would be sure to let me know.
Thanks for your help and input in this effort.
