I was fishing the Skagit today from my sled. Came back in just before dusk, the last sled off the water. Fifteen minutes later a drift boat comes in, and performs the ritual drift boat shuflle.
The remaining guy comes up and asks what kind of day we had. I was honest with the guy, told him we had a great day - didn't catch any stealhead but caught some Dolly's and a couple Silvers. The guy told that they didn't have any luck at all but really enjoyed the trip. At that point I figured out this was a guided client so I reenforced the guides ability if he's fishing this river, and made some remarks about what a great day it was. The client was obviously happy and truly did enjoy his time out there even if the fishing wasn't red hot.
As a side note - I used to guide in Alaska, so I was sensitive not to undermine the guides position with the client.
About this time the guide showed back up and put the trailer in the water to pick his boat up. I thought I'd find out where he'd been and what the water upriver was like. We chatted for a couple minutes. The guide complained about the color of the water, which was a little off but still had a nice green to it. I commented that this is the color it usually is below the Sauk so I didn't really mind it that much. It was at this point that the drift boat guide completely pissed me off. He said and I quote, "It would be fine up here if all you power boat guys would stay down in Sedro Woolley where you belong".
I couldn't believe this was supposed to be a professional guilde. I think this guys spent. He needs to get out and hang his hat up because he's definately worthless as a guide.
Knowing his client was still there, and my ten year old son I played the part of a gentleman and walked away without a word.
What was this guy thinking???

I couldn't tell you what the chap was thinking...but apparently he was pretty frustrated about not finding any fish for his client, and decided to blame the lack of fish on the sleds that were on the water.
It was dark when we got in from the Boat Show tonight, so I couldn't see the water to check the color...but it has been pretty ugly here just below the mouth of the Baker, but I can't see how anyone can relate that to power boats in the water.
Also, most of the guides I see around Rockport run both jet-sleds and DB's..depending on client count for the day. Generally they are true gentlemen in their boat handling...but...
Glad you had a good day on the water...next time you drift down below the mouth of the Baker, make the big right hand bend and go about 200 yds. you'll find a nice beach on the south side...its deep water to the sand, so stop in and say "Howdy". Were in the log home with the deck.

It sounds to me that he may have been trying to find any reason as to why his client went fishless. You know, I get probably the most satisfaction out of catching a steelhead when I pick one up behind other boats or in an area that a sled has worked. I guess I feel a little more skillful than lucky. At any rate you were definately the bigger man by not belittling his guiding skills or bragging about yours and then walking away when he offended you. If his client had a brain at all I'm sure he will find another guide next time. What a crappy ending of an otherwise enjoyable outing for that client.

Was it a guide who is a regular on that strech of the Skagit? I know some of you 'Nooch DBr's are very unhappy with some of the sledders, as are some some of the riverfront poperty owners. It sounds like the guy was a whiner, but I'm not looking for names.

T.C.
I am curious who this was. Did he have a white lavro DB? And did he wear a cowboy hat?. Client satisfaction is number one. I purposely run right through the drift after I have booned through a few times with no success and sometimes that all it takes to get the fish to get aggressive. I have had many hookups after doing this. I only do this if I am the only one fishing the drift, as most people would not understand and maybe get mad. He must not be use to fishing big water. As far as the color, I fished Friday with maybe a bit more color and the fishing was fine, We caught numerous Dolly’s and a couple of Steelhead one of which was a native about 13 lbs ( the first one of the season ) It just goes to show , that sometimes you’re a hero and sometimes your not. and some guy’s just have to blame it on somebody. I fish up there quite often T.C. I have the 20’open sled with the green stripe and the blue lavro DB. If you see me come over and say hi.

Your dead on B Gray... That's the guy.
BTW - I bought John Falavalito's 18' Open Aluminum sled if you know this boat. It has a dark blue waterline stripe, motorcycle windshield and it's named 'FISH ON'. So if you see me waive me down too!

Ya, the Skagit is really a Drift boat only river. I do not have a sled (buddy's do) I have a driftboat and sled is the best option for fishing that big water. You can be fishing a sweet slot on one side then the slot moves to the other side and you need to row your arse off to get way over there. Not to mention when they open the gates in the damn you can nearly ride the wake. What a dork, for making a comment like that. did you say his name was Mr. Bonehead?

We were up there Saturday and do remember seeing a white drift boat about early afternoon. I could see why he might be a little fruserated, when I saw him floating down he was in a pack of 20 or more sea kayaks. There was so many rafts and kayaks that day, we probably saw at least 250 eagle watchers. There was also a larger than normal sled activity, I'm guessing because the Skagit was the only river in half way descent shape. We had great day enspite of the traffic. It's a big river with lots of room to fish. That guy just had a fish less day and was pissy about it.

Grandpa, The pleasure was ours! My daughter (Nikki) talked about that hog of yours (pic) all the way home. What a beast of a King! After much addl. thought (and seeing the prices of sleds) it looks like were keeping the old Glaspar...and saving $$ for a DB for the Skagit. A lot of nice boats at the show, but didn't see much of a sled presence...a couple here and there...probably will be a lot more in Monroe next month. Sneaking out of the office this afternoon to go and take yet another "whack" at a Steelhead. Got a couple new spots (new to me, that is) to try...who knows...maybe it's time I got "lucky".. Mike

Obviously Mr. Guide has not spent that much time on the Skag because it is big water and better covered in a sled rather than a driftboat. Peace Superfly

Too funny! As I was reading the post, it reminded me of a "real dandy" of a dude who used to fish the Sky in the 80's, named Mr. Steelhead!
He was such an a**, that no one would ever give him a turn around. Then he dumped a boat at the mouth of the Sultan, thankfully everyone got out OK. Then he started to fish the upper river, from the forks down to the cable hole, or the cable hole to the high bridge, so no one would sabotage his rig. He was really getting screwed with, cause he would "cork" the plunkers and bank fisherman, and they got really tired of it. Anyhow, he then dumped another boat at "boulder drop" at Anderson Creek, and again no one was hurt.
A week later my dad "caught" one of his Loomis one piece "hot shot" rods with a 251 shimano, in the wedding dock hole (below Cable). It was a little rashed up, but in fine shape suprisingly. Then the turd heard about my dad catching it, and a couple of weeks later, while we were having breakfast at the Dutch Cup, he came up and asked for "his" rod back. My ol dman said "if you weren't such an a**, I'd give it to ya"!
Anyway, it sounds like the same old sniveling/whining dork from the Sky. You did nothing wrong, and everything right!!!
