I am to get my very own first custom rod as a gift, and it's my choice of makers. I've never had a custom rod and am anxious to have one built just for me. There is a few hundred to spend and I want to get the most for the money and would appreciate any advice on good custom rod makers.

go with a custom rainshadow! you will be very impressed with their line of rods. when you say a few hundred $$, you can probably buy more than one. northwest custom rods had the best price that i've seen so far.
good luck!

I bought my custom rod from TH Custom Rods. Tom and his son Travis build first class rods at very good prices. I am super happy with mine. I e-mailed them told them what I wanted and they built it. There are a lot more people on this board that have purchased from them and I am sure you will be hearing them chime in when they read your post. They are very good to work with. Just click on their banner at the top left corner of this page and shoot them an e-mail. For 200 you will get one heck of a rod. By the way, I purchased a Lamiglas 9'2" Ti2000 for $330 from them with SicTi guides, black wrap, pearl inlay, lefty hook keeper, and exposed blank trigger grip. If you purchase this rod from Lamiglas retail without SicTi guides it is $480. You might find one on e-bay for less but I got the exact rod I wanted built the way I wanted it. smile

Have Travis from TH custom rods build your rod from a Rainshadow blank. Rainshadow blanks are the best for the money, and Travis makes an excellent rod. smile

Exactly HBP!! Go with a TH rod, regardless of what length, weight, etc. Rainshadow offers any blank of choice, and Travis will build you a beautiful, truly custom rod with a great warranty. Best of all, service and delivery are very prompt and they work to please you!!

Instead of asking for a new rod ask for a wrapping tool and book and learn to do it yourself.

I learned to wrap a rod at age 15 with a cardboard box and fly tying bobin... Its a skill I look forward to passing on to my boy...

The satifaction of landing a fish on your own custom built rod is like no other.

Or you could go with the suggestions above... thumbs

There really is only one choice for me. TH Custom Rods.

By far, the rod he made for me is the best one of the lot.

Here's a picture of it. wink You just have to figure out which rod it is! wink

Seriously though, you will NOT be disappointed with a TH Custom Rod.

As for the blank, I'd go with a Rainshadow over a Loomis GL3, but would go for the Sage over the IMX.

Looks like a decent arsenal there Parker. There must be some salt water rods on another wall?
I'll guess the one with the Curado on it?

4th from the top is a FS85C laugh

Look at the wrapping above the front cork.

Also look how thick the blank is.

Parker am I right?

Hey this is fun. hello

We should have a guess the rod thread, oh wait that could get ugly. laugh

Sky-Guy - Nope.
Angg - More. Always need more.
4Salt - Bite me. wink
Lead Thrower - Correct!

Oh come on, this is too easy.

Here are your clues. You already know which one is the 10.5' 1263c Rod (look for the duct tape, as 4Salt would say!). The Sage is a 9 footer.

I bet if you look at the spinning rods, you can easily find the 1141's and even the 1143s. They are 9'6".

I would recommend Greg's Custom Rods up in Lake Stevens(www.gregscustomrods.com). He's a really good guy, and will build up as simple or fancy as your tastes may want.

From their website, TH seems to just build spec rods, and build them inexpensively. With a few hundered to spend, the sky is your limit, and you should talk to a real rod crafter, who can really knock your eyes out, and Greg is one of those guys.

Failing wanting to work with Greg I would consult Tackleworks, and look for a builder in your area: http://www.tackleworks.org/.

I am an intermediate rod builder, having about 10 under my belt, and know that you want more than I can do. But I want to see you guided to the right place, and not just by word of mouth. Custom rod building goes far beyond the realm of prebuild rods, and you should see the galaxy before picking your star.
