Picked up 50# Spiderwire, #15 Kwikfish (s), etc., etc. Need recommendations on rod and reel? Not that I need another "outfit" (per my wife), but would appreciate info on rod length & weight, reel make/model and/or capacity. Do I need backing for Spiderwire? Just want an excuse to buy another setup! Thanks in advance!

Depends on your budget. If it is up to $300 total, I would spend 2/3 on reel and 1/3 on rod. If $400 then go 50/50 and if over that then you can start spending more on the rod.

Daiwa reels rarely fail you. Take a look at Daiwa Millionaire CVZ casting reel for $200 or Daiwa Team X (about $200) but this one is not a high capacity.
or Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600 (Low cap) or 6500 series for $50-$70. You get your money worth with any of those reels.
I use max 20lbs main for king/chum or even 15lbs main and like to use lighter low capacity reels.

If you are banking in fast(er) water for chums or kings take a look at Loomis HSR1025C. It is a mag heavy rod but it is light and VERY sensitive for a 15-30lb rod! Lami G1314 or 1315? (Kenai special) is a lighter rod (12-25lb) but I like it. Those rods used to be about $200 and less for Lami.

If anchor fishing look for an eight-nine foot, 12-25 line rated rod. Just make sure it has a tip sensative enough to see the rythm of the lure. 50lb. braid works well without backing. That's what i use for my springer setup. IMHO a Lamiglas G 1380-T matched with a 6500 is a great way to go.

For a reel, I recommend an ABU 6500 with a power handle ($90 regular price, $75 on sale). For a rod, try the Lamiglass HCF 905 ($150). It's a 9-foot fiberglass (E-Glass) rod that is specifically made for trolling the Columbia, Buoy 10, and light saltwater. Better yet, stop in to the Lamiglass Factory store in Woodland and ask for a recommendation. They might even have what you need on the rack for a discount.

Good luck.

Abu 6500C for a reel $65.00. Berkley Air 8' or 9' rod rated at 15 to 50 $59.00 on sale at GI Joes. No need to spend the extra $$ for Loomis or Lami for fishing kwikies as you aren't drifting them with pencil lead. The springers will let you know when they climb on.

Funny I saw this thread. Just had a birthday party last night & recieved about $175 in cash & G.I. Joe $$. Looked at several rods & reels JUST for anchoring up for springers. After about an hour of deliberation I finally chose the Shimano Clarus 8'6" , Power: Medium Heavy, Action: Fast, Line:12-20lb and a Ambassaduer 6500 C3 loaded with 30lb. PowerPro. Total Bill w/tax= $186.00

The rod had the same action as a $150 Lami Mag taper rated for 15-25lb and we all know about the reel.

After fishing several years for springers I wanted that "certain" feel. Heavy in the butt, light in the tip so I can see my K-15 do it's "thing". The set up I purchased feels alot better than what I have been using. Most of the rods i had been using were a bit too powerful or long.

This will be my "go to" rod for springers now!

Yeee Haw! Bring 'em ON! flog

Having bought one last fall, i can say i do not recommend above reel. I have already replaced the drags because they failed after one use. And lost fish because of. I am really impressed by my Shimano Corsair, around the same price and the drag works way smoother and ive caught numerous salmon without fail. They had defects a few years back, but have fixed the problems. As for rods, i use Okuma Celilos. Great rod for the money. $40 bucks or so. Lots of sizes to choose from.

I did have one 6500 that failed after one trip... it was a 6500C4 and it seized up after accidently hooking a big sturgeon on its first salmon trip. But my 6500C3's have been rock-solid, typically a few years between rebuilds. Great all-around boat reel.

Where can I get a "power handle" for a 6500c3? I'm not crazy about the symmetric stock handle.

EXFFPM , I personally won't/don't buy any rods over 40 bucks....i just don't see any real need. As far as rod size...i go with 7' to 7'9 max for trolling or anchor fishing in the Columbia or Willamette. 5501 C3's are my reel of choice and recently "splurged" on a 6500, My rods are Quantum XL 7' 15-40 heavy...kinda stiff i know....but also can haul a nice sturgeon off the bottom....paid 29.99 at Big 5 thumbs Recently got two Shimano Convergence Rods 7' 15-25 medium/heavy for $24.99 each at Big 5 also.....If you take care of them like any rod they should last quite some time.... on anchor of trolling there is only about 40 yards max of line out when a fish is on anyway.....not to worry. Yes, I'm cheap when it comes to rods. laugh I only use 20# crystal ivory.

Louis
