That guide is suppose to be one of the best out that way! He has been fishing that area since he was a little boy. My friends dad goes with him a few times a season, his clients have boated many in the high 20's to low thirties!! its nice to see the steelhead record finally broken!! that is a freaking hog!!!!

Was it just me or was the fish WAY out of the water? When does that rule take effect? While I dont support the rule in general, I dont think he was doing a very good job holding that fish. It looked like it was laying mostly on his sleeves which would do a great job removing slime and scales....

Does he get a ticket in the mail in this case?

If the fish was never weighed on a certified scale how can they make it a new record? Will they take measurements and weight estimates for the record books??The article said the fish was released, thank goodness!

If I caught that fish I dont think I'd take the chance of it slipping back into the water. After I got the pic, off he goes.

If they are going to take measurements for state records then all the records should be broken fairly quickly. Maybe they should have another set of "measured" records. Or maybe several sets like the day it was caught then how big it was a month later.

What a fish! I'm afraid though that all the angler and the guide will have at the end of the day is the satisfaction that they landed a fish that was probably bigger than the official record - which is quite a thing in itself, but not an official record. I can't imagine that measurements and calculations will suffice for an actual record. It would be nice, however, to have the authorities establish some sort of category for caught, measured and released fish. With appropriate controls, it would at least make for interesting speculation and talk over a beer or 10.

Not intending to start anything by it, but isn't Mansfield the one who said that anyone who fishes in the CnR water above 101 on the Hoh is a "fish killer" who takes fish off the redds, and repeatedly catches them until they die?

If you think about it fish records should not be allowed anyay. They just encourage people to kill the biggest fish genes out of the species.

His measurements would make it 43lbs not the 33.8 as stated in the article. Look at it not as big as stated. Hand easily wrapped around the tail, The hatchery monster on the other board had 10 1/2 inch girth on the tail and a bigger head and looked longer. look at the pic and you decide. But indeed a nice fish with a serious body lock on it.
