Anyone have any recent experience sport fishing Dutch Harbor in the past few years. Considering a trip in mid to late August for halibut and fly in trip to Volcano Bay for silvers. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Paranoid,

I don't know much about the sport fishing there but I do know that the weather gets very iffy from the middle of August and later.

Thats a long way to go for halibut and silvers, you'll spend a full day at each end of your trip just travelling. There are alot of other places that are as good or better and if you fly out of Seatac in the A.M. you can be fishing in the P.M.
As mentioned above, weather is a factor by mid August. I spent the summer there in 85 (commercial fishing) and there weren't many nice days in the last 1/2 of Aug. or the first week of Sept. I was scheduled to leave on the 1st but weather delayed me 4 or 5 days.

I appreciate the feedback guys but I have to let you know that this place is truly unbelievable. I spent 18 years commercial fishing in Kodiak and the outlying islands. I am convinced that I have literally sportfished salmon and halibut in places where no other has. I thought that I had seen it all until I fished Volcano Bay for silvers. Unmatched hospitality, scenery, and non-stop action with coho 15 to 20 lbs on spinners. All this while floating in a gin clear volcanic crater lake. We must have hooked 20 fish each in just a few hours of fishing. The next day we fished halibut. The last two world record halibut have come from boats out of Unalaska. The latest weighed in at 459 lbs. 125-150 lb fish are not uncommon. We kept two that were 130 lb twins. After spending the most fantastic fishing week I could imagine I am convinced that I had experienced a truly epic event. I promised myself that someday I would return. It sounds that that dream may again become a reality. We are setting up a trip in mid to late August. Sounds like two days chasing the monsters in the Bering Sea and a four day...yes a four day fly in trip to Volcano Bay for silvers. If you can sense the excitement you're right . As a matter of fact, I think I'm gonna bust!

I fished out of there for a lot of years, My boats were all at least over 100', Great place for fishing, but I would'nt go much past the 25th of Aug. Halibut don't care to chase bait up and down in the thirty foot range, But it would work better for salmon.
