My son and I went up to Sekiu last weekend and had a great time. This was the first time that Justin had been to Sekiu. not 10 minutes after we put the lines down we had our first fish. When Justin got it to the boat we found that it was a nice 20lb Native King! What a way to start the weekend!
All in all on Saturday we got the 1 king, 15 silvers 3 clipped, 20 Black Bass, and 4 Lings. The water was pretty rough and the fog rolled in on us. At the time we were fishing by the Green Bell and I got all turned around after taking my eyes off the compass for 15 seconds. That sure taught me a lesson! I shut down the motor so we could listen for the bell and it was only 40 feet off the starboard side! Whew! We couldn't see it but after going just about a boat length there it was. Next year I hope to get myself a GPS so I don't worry quite so much about my nav skills!
BTW: We caught all the bottom fish on a Storm Wildeye Swim Shad 4" Jig in Bunker Color. These things are amazing! They really look like a fish and in the water they move like them too! I added a little weight to the belly as they aren't quite heavy enough as they come out of the bag. We would cast them out into the kelp and slowly lift them over the kelp strands. As soon as they dropped off the kelp the bass would smash them. The biggest one we had would have to have been close to 10lbs. They were a lot of fun and the action was great! We were in about 35 feet of water. We are definitely going to do that again! Only this time we'll take a lot more of these guys! We lost 3 of them to the Lings as we couldn't get them unhooked. We also lost 1 to a bass that was smart enough to wrap Justin up in the Kelp. We had one Salmon chase it but it never struck.
On Sunday we started out at about 5:00 and headed over by the caves. Justin got his line down first and then I got mine down and as I was running the kicker I had a lot to watch. 30 seconds later I missed the first takedown. 2 minutes Later Justin missed his first takedown. Not a good way to start the morning! The next takedown was mine, I missed it. As I'm complaining about missing another one it Slammed it again right on the surface! He Freight Trained it straight out of the water. What a sight. This silver was hot and took several runs and jumped a lot. We finally got it to the boat and it was our first clipped fish of the day. About 5 fish later Justin finally got his first clipped Silver of the day. The fishing slowed a lot so we decided to head over by the Bell and see if we could find any kings over there. About a half hour later Justin pulled in a very nice clipped silver but decided he wanted to continue fishing so we let it go.
We then headed out to the shipping lanes to see if we could find more silvers. We got a few missed take downs and the only 2 shakers of the trip out there. I also got the only dogfish I have ever gotten out there. The fog was starting the roll in again and the water was beating us up pretty bad so we decided to head in and try in front of the caves again. Good thing too! On the first pass Justin got a nice small Native King of about 10lbs. As Justin is fiddling with the rod to try and put the line out againg and fighting being able to stand up in the rough water I turn the boat to head upwind. As soon as I start the turn the line is ripped off the downrigger on the other rod. As I try to get the rod out of the holder I look up and see the fish ripping across the suface! This is a big fish! I finally get the rod out and Give a nice hookset. The king instantly dives for the bottom and Justin has to turn the boat so that I don't hand the line up on my river anchor on the bow. I finally get the fish back up to the surface and it decides it hasn't had enough and takes another run to the bottom. This time when I get it up it's ready for a picture and release. Unforunately I didn't think to measure it but I guestimate that it was between 30 and 40lbs. A very nice way to finish out a wonderful fishing trip!
We came home with 5 silvers and some wonderful memories. What more could I ask for?
