I cant believe that there is only a small posting regarding the massive spill in prime waters of PS. Seems there is more interest in tribal BS or reg issues than manning up and seeing what resources individuals are willing to offer proactivley for clean up. Yeah Yeah I know stay away, blah blah blah.

How many sportfishers are willing to offer their time to assist in a clean up effort that will take MONTHS to resolve. Are any of the self proclaimed "activists" here doing anything to contact their "inside sources" to see how WE as "stewards" can offer assistance?

I would think that Puget Sound Anglers Assoc. and other organizations would have the "ins" to see how we can come together to enhance an already obviously poor response to this crisis......

I think you are jumping the gun with your claim.

Give it some time then make your judgment. I didn't find out about the spill untill 6.30 this evening. Should I go out and start cleaning up oil tonight?

They were saying on the evening news that the Dept. of Ecology wanted the public to stay away from the spill.

I better watch the news....Haven't heard a thing. I doubt the powers that be will allow the public to "help" though. I think they always use professional clean up companies. Volunteers usually help clean up birds if there are any covered in oil.

Seriously though...despite images of oil soaked birds, isn't the bigger impact on the lower half of the food chain, such as invertegrates and plankton?

The largest visual impact will be on birds and coastal shorelines, I've heard the spill was as little as 1000 or as much as 5000 gallons. Impact will be greatly determined by duration of the cleanup. Things like plankton won't be a major concern due to their irregular distribution. Reefs and fish that remain stationary in the area can be affected heavily, of course clams, etc.. that filter water will feel the greatest impact.

This oil spill is going to have some serious effects...

The South Sound has some of the largest concentrations of zooplankton...

Quartermaster Harbor is a major spawning area for the QH stock of herring...

Never heard who was responsible ???

I for one am mad as hell, but I think the GP is not so aware as it seems to have really been downplayed in the local news. I would think this would be the top story. I hope they find who is responsible and nail 'em good!! All we can do is hope our tax dollars do the job and get this cleaned up as fast as possible. I have a hard time understanding how it got so far before anyone noticed?? I do know this, if and when they let volunteers in to help, I'll be there!

I would be willing to bet it was one of those cruddy looking ships that are picking up steel for China..I watched some real nasty looking ships this summer down there..hard to believe they even ran let alone floated.

I watched K5 news which covered it as the lead story yesterday. What I couldn't believe was that it took most of the day for the cleanup to even start. It was reported at 1 AM Thur and the excuse reported was that the cleanup couldn't start because of the fog. That seems pretty lame...haven't they heard of GPS and radar? Would have like to have seen the oil booms capture this mess before it spread all over, but waiting through several cycles of the tide made this hopeless. Now they are cleaning it up off the beaches, which is better than nothing, but not very successful. I can't believe that an area as populated and sensitive as Puget Sound doesn't have instant response (30 min max) to a spill like this.

Good evening, Mr. Orwell, care to comment on this topic?

"But ,of course". Thank you sir, we are listening.

"Be advised that the local authorities will soon be issuing a statement that will tell you exactly what to believe about this spill. Under no cicumstances shall you question the statements from your local authorities. The Environmental Protection Agency is on site and everything is under control. The offender will be caught and prosecuted unless, of course, they happen to be a most favored nation in trade. Have no concern. Your government will protect you".

But Mr. Orwell, I always respected your criticism of big government.

"Santiago, you ignorant fool, haven't you realized yet that everyone has their price?"

Sorry sir, I guess I have not. Thank you for your time.

the price of being forced to wait for a "market solution" by the by the corporate oil-igarchy that keeps us dependant on technology that is a hundred years out of date. if the "supply siders" would not squash all subsidies for research and design of fuel alternatives such as this bush , the last bush, and reagan did. than we wouldnt be dependand on such out of date technologies.

the fault does not lay with just one ship. the blame falls on a whole society that believes in the "jobs vs environment "lie and the "market solution" lie

healthy economies are directly related to healthy environments . by investing in environmental quality we are investing in our economic future.

one more huge reason not to vote for bush who stands against our sustainable future in order to support his oil buddies with their short term vision
