Is anybody from this board going to be on the Skagit for opening day? I am hoping to get the day off of work to make it down.

Why would there be a BIG rush for the small amounts of Salmon and Steel?
What do I know...

What do I know... It's the first Skagit king season in decades so it's a big deal. Now all the guys who have spent each summer pulling kwik fish and tossing jumbo egg clusters under floats for the almost non-existent summer steelhead can catch their kings without any worry of getting busted.

Add about 10 - 15 more boats on the river for even bringing this fishery up on the BB.

Fish checker claims to have counted 87 trailers in the three lots at some point today. Weekend could be brutal!

I was there, it was very crowded. I caught nothing, guess I should have got there closer to daybreak than a few of hours after. One hole hade 9 boats anchored in it when I went by. Saw 1 chinook killed and when I talked to the fish checkers, they said lots of fish moved into the hatchery last night with the rain. There was "about 1/2 fish per boat" according to the fish checkers (WDFW?).One of them commented on how dark the fish that they checked were, he thought they would be brighter for this time of year. "Red hot" fishing I guess.

Maybe I will fish my favorite springer river next weekend instead of the Skagit. My cousin who lives at Hamilton. Got out there in his sled at 4:30am and he said he fished until 3:00pm when he limited. He caught a bright clipped and one dark unclipped back to back about 6-7am. Then he caught another clipped fish to limit that was in decent shape, he said it was grayish bronze. He said his two clipped keepers were 6lbs and 14lbs. The unclipped was estimated at 12-14lbs. He caught the two morning fish on a corky and eggs drifted through a hole just up from Howard miller while anchored and the other came on a silver and green K-15. I guess he did better than most. Meanwhile I was stuck in school. I am hitting the Green for early summer runs in high water tomarrow after school.

Fished tonight along with a couple other DB's that put in late..pretty much a quiet river by 7pm. Saw a few rolling, and didn't see any caught.
These are certainly not URB's...all the ones I saw roll or jump were pretty colored up...but then, were fishing 40+ miles up from the mouth of the river.

40 miles from the salt, more like 65-80. Howard miller is like river mile 64 or something.

Curtis: 100% correct! I tend to forget that the ocean is not just on the other side of I-5.. Heard that a couple of the ones brought in (people kept) were really nasty boots. Yeesh...better to leave that kind in the river! Mike

My cousin said he picked up one that was pretty chrome just above rockport and that was the only brighter one he saw caught on the opener.

Of the 9 we landed, 6 were chrome, of the chromers...3 were nates. There is defintely some nice fish to be had. It looked like most of the fish that had started turning were being caught in the some of the slower eddies by the bankies.
