Did anyone go to Nootka Sound in Vancouver Island lately for summer king? How was it? Please let me know. I am planning to July 22nd for five days. It was fantastic last year. I hope this year would be the same.

Doc, where are you staying and where are you fishing? I've got some contacts in that area up near/in Tahsis that can give you the skinny.

Thank you. Yes, I check the web site often. THey are right by where I usually stay. They have not posted this summer tournament result yet. They should have had last weekend. I am looking forward to seeing better result than last year.

My dad owns a house up in Tahsis. He is up there as we speak. He fishes alot around penn rock and Center Island. He called me after the first day of Fishing on Monday and said he only got a 23lb. only fish of the day. He did say that some boats are doing pretty good going out about 12miles. I don't think he has the balls to run out that far and try it.
Fishing should be really good by the time you get up there.

I leave in the morning for my first trip to Nootka Sound. The boat has been triple checked, although I will surely forget something. Any recommendations on equipment/tackcle that I should take that may not be obvious? We will be trolling w/ downriggers and jigging. Thank's and I'll post a report in a week.

Hi Nookie,

I hope you get this message before you go. I did really really well last year. My buddy and I got 10 chinook. Everything was over 20lb. We had two tyees. We only used koho killer green with splatter back. It was phenomenal. I fished there over last six years. This was first time I ever caught many. I hope you do well. Let me know how you did.

I will also be heading up to Nootka for the first time last week in July. I'm very interested to hear how you do! Which chart do I need and where do I fish from Critter Cove?

How far is the run from Tahsis to the ocean?

If I remember right the run from Tahsis to the ocean is about 7 miles. I'll be up there the last week of July also.

The run from Tahsis to the ocean is 17 miles. I know it sounds like a long run but at least it is senic. Dad said the fishin picked up a little before they left on Sat the 25th but still a little slow. He did Best at Ferrior.(not sure of spelling ). Good luck

The run from Tahsis to the ocean is about equal whether your headed to the Nootka side of the island or the Esperanza side of the island. You pretty much figure about 45 minutes to an hour one way depending on boat speed and water conditions. It's usually calm in the morning and windy by noon. The point your talking about is Ferrier PT and it does get crowded at times. It can also be a sloppy there if the North wind is blowing which it does just about every day starting around mid July through the end of the summer. They call them "dirunal winds." Oh but the area does have some phenomenal fishing.

Wow, 17 miles. That's a lot longer than I remembered but it has been a few years since I was up there. It is a bit of a poke but well worth the trip!

EF,

Critter is not at Tahsis. Critter is about 12 miles from the (ocean) lighthouse at Friendly Cove.

Slab, was thinking of staying up at Tahsis so I could also run Esperenza (sp) out to the ocean also. From there you could fish either side of Nootka Island, but of course you knew that! Just trying to figure out if it's too long of a run & I would be better of just staying at Critter the whole time.

It amazes me just how many of us leave this state to find good fishing. I also migrate to nootka in July. The biggest tip I would give is speed. Watch the Canadians and match there speed or get out of there way. Some people troll at 2-2.5 but it worked wonders for me at 4-4.5. Keep it in mind.

EF, it really all depends on how far you want to run everyday to fish. If you stay in Tahsis and people do, you will be running 45 to 60 minutes each day to get to the fishing grounds. Personally I prefer to stay closer to where I'm fishing if that's an option as it cuts down on fuel costs and wear and tear. With the price of fuel this year you can bet I won't run any farther than I have to. I haven't checked but I'll bet a litre of gas in BC right now is close to $1.00. Last year it was .78 a litre and we all know what's happened to gas since then.

Thanks for the replies all, I did not get them till now but they are right on none the less. The guy that I went with has been fishing up there for years (20+) and has a differant idea than the canadians when it comes to fishing. He may not have the steady action, but he always catches bigger fish. We used his methods more than not and only got two decent fish, 32 and 24, but he said the amnount of coho really were interferring with his fishing style.

I know people do not go up there for coho, but my understanding is there are not normally this many this early, and decent size for this early too. We kept one the last day when we did not reach our Spring possesion limit that was 8 lbs clipped and we released several that were 9+.

We did get some Lings and small halibut on the second day while searching deeper, as the Springs were not to be found. Overall it was a bit early, and there were only 3-6 boats outside each day, very light pressure.

We stayed at Chinootka Lodge, across from Critter Cove, it was a 10 mile run to Friendly cove and another 10 to Bajo reef, the last 10 in the slop and swells. Gas was indeed over 1.00/liter, actually 1.06 at CC. Glad I had a small boat for that reason, 40 miles out and back at Bajo was 16 Gal.

Will post a pic of my 24 when I get everything downloaded, right now I need sleep. Good luck to all of you going later this summer, I'm envious, but I just could not pass up the better rates now and thanks for the replies.
