Went out this weekend for salmon on the Slammer with Rhett. A 10.5 hour day on the water and only 11 fish to show for it, sloooooow!!! \:\(

The fishing was so slow the skipper decided to anchor up and catch a bunch of rockfish for all the people who didn't get salmon. We thought we were just going to take home rockfish until we accidentally caught one while reeling up to check bait \:D

It was a small king, but hey, you can't beat the taste of chrome ocean-caught salmon!

Over half the salmon on the boat were silvers, which was kind of wierd considering the day before about all that they caught was kings.

Has anyone else fished out of westport or La Push lately?

My brother fished three rods about 7 hours y'day for for 12 fish total. Four were shaker kings, the rest silvers, but only 3 were bonkable. He was about 12 miles out front and just very slightly north. He did as good if not better than most boats he saw out there.

We were in the murky water yesterday, 12 miles out. We got a few kings up to 25#, and I had three takes at the boat, two kings and a silver.

If you are on a charter boat, here are a few tips.

1. Always keep your bait working. Drop down to 50-80 feet, one strip at a time to avoid tangles, then reel up unevenly, stopping every 3-5 feet for a little bit.

2. When you see your sinker (helps if you wear polarized glasses), stop. Move your bait from side to side with it 4-5 feet below the surface. Kind of like Musky fishing. Why do you think they paint the weights orange and pink?

If you stick your rod in a pole holder and wait, you might hook a fish when it is time to reel up. (why do you think the boat almost always hooks fish when the captain gives the order to reel up?

3. Always be the last one out of the water, and the first one in.
