Here are the shotguns that i would look at
PUMPS

if you want to spend less than $500 get the
remington 870 express. It is a pump and i kicks like a mule

browning bps

semi auto

benelli superblack eagle ( Expensive but worth it)
beretta a 391 vectra
remington 11-87

I have a mosberg 835 for my duck gun. Chambers 3 1/2 inch shells and it takes abuse extremely well. Inexpensive too!

Like anything, how much do you want to spend?

I also have a mossberg 835. It has done me well for over 5 yrs now. If you want to spend the money though, Benelli.

If you are going for a cheap gun I wouldn't overlook even the Mossberg 500-C... VERY niec gun for the money! I can shoot straight as an arrow 23-25 targets consistently out of 25!

I don't know how much you want to spend, I have a nice Remington 870 express super magnum 3 1/2 inch shells. I picked it up about 3 years ago for about $275.00, synthetic stock, nice for hunting in the salt water. Personnelly I wouldn't spend alot of money on a gun if your using in or around salt water.

i'm a benelli fan. my nova pump has been super reliable, i've dunked it, been out in the rain and saltwater--- hunted chuckar, (okay, maybe a double might suit upland better) pheasant, turkey, and ducks. killed 'em all. the price is great ~$400 or so. you can shoot 3 1/2's down to 2 3/4's. if you want to hunt geese, definately consider a gun that will shoot the 3 1/2's. the SBE is really nice (but spendy, like $1200) the nice thing about the autoloader benelli's is that they're inertia guns, not gas powered. they're lighter, less bulky, and they're easy to clean because you don't have all that powder residue in the action; there's no o-rings or gas cylinder. they're sweet.....

Best autoloader for the money is a Remington 11-87. Mine is as reliable as any Benelli SBE I've seen and was about 1/2 the price. I abuse it and never clean it and it still works great.

Hmmm...maybe I should clean it now.

Get an 870 rem if you dont want to spend alot. If you decide you want a high performance semi auto dont waste your money on anything, go straight to a benelli SBE

I wish I could buy a truck like my Remington 870.

That gun has seen more downright abuse than any gun should; it always gets the job done in salt spray, freezing rain, and dusty Eastern Washington fields. It even looks about the same as the day I bought it - ugly as sin, but who cares when it's as rugged as it is!

I shoot a pump and like them over the autos, as there are less things that can go wrong or do go wrong.
I have a BPS and my dad an 870. Both are great guns. I like the bottom eject of the BPS but like Jamie said, the 870 is a work horse and my dad has had his for over 20 years now.
I would stay away from Mossberg as i have a couple friends that have had problems with them.

The 835s are decent guns, but man are they loud! With the ported barrel they just about burst your eardrums in a duck blind. I had one for a couple years and sold it because of this.

The sad bit is that I have a *never fired* Remington 11-87 SPS Super Magnum.

Been in my safe now for 3 years.

\:\(

Maybe I'll get to use it this winter. Geese be ware!

Oh yeah, I'd recommend the 870 Wingmaster for a good pump shotgun. 870 Express if you want a Dirt Gun. 11-87 if you want an auto.

I'd go with a Mossberg if I wanted a gun to use, never clean, and toss after a season or two.

Had a Browning Citori over/under, but it never did fit or shoot like the Remingtons. Traded it for the 11-87.

Shotguns are just like fishing rods. Everyone has their opinion on which is best, but like any other tool, it's only as good as the person who is using it.
