1bighog: It's a RATIO. If they sell more ads they can run more content. Every magazine I have worked for uses a ratio to determine how much editorial they can run. They all have waaaaay more articles than they can afford to run. Therefore they run the ones they think the readers will want to read.
If they sell a few more ads, they can run a few more pages of editorial content. If they ignore this basic rule they go tits up. I can name at least five fishing magazines that have gone tits up, primarliy because they couldn't sell enough ads.

Thats what i am here for!!! gotta get a couple fights in to prove that this ultimate fighting training is worth the money they are raking me over the coals for. Actually i dont care. Everyone seemd ok .....cept Amato's friend....Mister Vedder . i love your float fishing book by the way. hahaha its cool. i mean you have to defend your friends. Amato is making money...good for him. but so is Jenna jameson. because she produces (never actually seen one of her films, just what EVERY one says) films that sell millions. Is it right? what if they threw some adds in during a porno or right in the middle of a DVD you bought? What would be the need for stuff like TiVO or any real-time editing TV. NOBODY LIKES ADDS!!! You would be furious! i didnt pay 20$ for an add in my DVD.but since Amato makes his money its cool. just sayin. Plus i like to stir people up. makes them actually think about day to day life : ) Easy Dave. i know what you think about the subject. But you also get paid from it correct? i could be wrong but its irrelevant NO ONE LIKES ADDS. Period. and there are a whole lot of them in STS nowadays. i am spent

Ok, I'm going to be honest with you, for your own good. When a person writes something that is intentionally overbearing and obnoxious, people will ignore your message. Worse than that, you'll miss out on broadening your fishing network. Next time I get an offer to fill a couple seats I don't want someone to say "as long as it's not that Mergantroider". We'd both lose out if that happened.
Dave has been honest with you. I've fished with him, and he is a very decent man. And considering that he was a big part of the reason I moved to Western Washington, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. Plus he paid for my beer. Be nice to him.
Merg, This is as harsh a rebuttal I will ever publicly make of someone I fish with. Now go to your room for some quiet time, and think about what you've done.

I stopped subscribing to STS over a year ago. The articles kept getting shorter and way too many adds. I switched to the Salmon Steelhead Journal, which, I believe to be a better magazine. I suggest others to do the same.

If I am interpreting this thread correctly the publisher should just publish more ads as that is his main relationship (not the readers). Call it what Dave makes it out to be...a money making enterprise mainly between the publisher and the ad buyers. "Follow the money" as they say...if the main source of income is from the ads then why not have less content? Make mo money? If the content results in mo money then keep lowering the content to make room for mo ads...if the reduced content makes the money stream suffer...then mo content and add more ads.....somehow this thread makes it sound like the driver is money and only money. I am being a little facetious here to make a point. It is a negative to loyal readers when the big money takes over. I get it and it is what it is. I am sure the subscription from the readers supplies some amount of revenue stream but doesn't sound like it can stand up to the $$'s from the ads. It is what it is...I don't like the amount of ads and I won't buy this mag because of it but I also understand there is a business side to money making enterprises. The publisher has done what most anyone will do when he finds that somthing is making money. Like in football...keep calling that play until they stop it. The influence of the dollar can be seen in the changes throughout the years in this mag. Both positive and negative to the subscribers. The quality of the paper and pictures is much better because of the money this mag makes from ads. I am sure the content is better because of the ads too. But, It does bother the purists who can't afford to buy every product being shoved in his face and its a nuisance to keep flipping through them. If I don't like it I don't buy it. There is a tradition that goes way back with this mag that I understand can drum up emotions when the almighty dollar influences it. So be it. Find another subscription until it starts making mo money....and so on and so on...

Personally, I enjoy reading STS. It's a great magazine and I love the pictures. Some of the articles are a little off my preferred subject but the magazine isn't specified to be to an all bait audience like I'd prefer it. Don't forget, as you become a better fisherman you've obviously learned more to get there. I don't purchase the magazine in hopes to learn new things as I'd like to think I'm up to speed with my fishing abilities. Although for others that are just getting started every magazine would have lots of great info. Merg, if the magazine has let you down a little perhaps you should consider writing an article. I'm sure with a little assistance a few of us could help get it published for you... Heck, I've even thought about writing an article on how to make egg cures... Nahh, just kidding!! Keith

Now thats a complex subject. The only time I ever read a magazine anyway is when I am taking a dump. I can pretty much read the whole thing in that amount of time and thats pretty much any magazine.
So the other day I saw nothing worth reading in the stack so I picked up a copy of "teen cosmo" that belongs to my 15 year old daughter and started leafing through it... You wanna talk about ads !!! How many brands of femine hygine products are out there " So light, so delicate " from the descriptions you would think that if you put syrup on em they would be better than pancakes !!!
Magazines are just a way to pass some time. Nothing you ever read in one is new, but its something in print about your hobbie so you read it anyway. Anyone want to know the " top 10 big buck secrets for 2008 " send me a P.M and I'll tell you that they will be the same " top 10 big buck secrets " from 1946.
STS is as good as it gets for taking a dump. Its about fishing for steelhead, and I like that.
For the record I would like to thank Cabelas for sending me more fodder for the crapper than imaginable because I bought a dog bed from them 20 some years ago and they have my address

Speaking of magazines verses bulletin boards. Seems to me reading a magazine these days is like doing it with a blow-up doll. It gets the job done, but. The bulletin boards on the other hand are living breathing creatures that you can interact with.
I have no empirical knowledge to back up that analogy, BTW. This is probably one of only a few things I have seen you right that has some insight. On the other hand I have to rip you in the next quote.

BRUn: I think you are right on. Especially about Cabelas. Many magazine editors are fearful the Internet will kill them, but I say magazines will stick around, as its too hard to carry the puter into the craper.
STS recently did a reader survey to see what changes the readers wanted. Many said they wanted shorter articles. perhaps the readers are now eating more fiber?
