I didn't read every post on the topic but I'll throw in my two cents. It is my understanding that only IGFA certified line is guaranteed to break at or very very near it's labelled strength. Products like Maxima UG advertise a given breaking strength but are usually quite a bit higher, hence it's bigger diameter than a lot of other lines with the same advertised breaking strength. IGFA line is a standard for competetion purposes. I also have my opinions on fluorocarbon. I have used it extensively since it was introduced and I do have favorite brands. The absolute best I have ever used is AeroFlo Sightfree. Suffix fluorocarbon is a very very close second. I always use it for leaders from fly fishing to steelhead to fall kings. It is a different animal than mono. The only cons that I can find with it is I have to tie different knots with it and it is stiff (however the stiffness becomes a pro when trailing a squid behind a flasher). The other pros are that it is clear, super abrasion resistant and doesn't stretch much. Less stretch means more sensitivity, shorter and more positive hooksets. If you are having trouble with a quality fluoro breaking on you try different knots or a slower action rod and a short hookset. Hey Vince, stop by the shop for some donations toward that project you are working on. Happy to donate some 20 foot lengths of line for the cause.
