I've been itching to try for bass for a little change instead of all the trout fishing I've been doing...
So my question is, is it even worth fishing for bass? The lake is about 100 acres and is very shallow, 15-20 feet at the deepest.....If its worth fishing, what should I throw at them and what water/structure should I look for to locate these bass?

Thanks,
Fh07

In lake like that you will find largemouth. It is time to start thinking about bass and they can be caught this time of year. To stack things in your favor try to select days where you expect the water temperatures to be stable or better yet climbing. Fishing after a couple days of warmer days and nights is best. Having rising temps is probably more important than the actual temperatures. For that reason afternoons are often better than mornings. At this time of year I have had best look on slow presentations.

For large fish hard to beat a jig -n-pig. Also good methods are slow rolled spinner baits (like white) and hard or soft body stick baits fished slowly with lots of pauses. Like to target wood cover, docks, and emergent weeds. The fish can be at the deeper "breaks" (5 to 8 feet) or extemely shallow (a foot or less) but usually are not far from cover. As the temperatures creep into the 50s have also done very well with grubs, tube baits, etc and ocassional crankbaits.

Yea it's a largemouth lake. We went in shallow just to look at an old dock and we spooked a nice 2-3 lber out from somewhere and he went swimming by us. I'll try the jig-n-pig .

What colors for jigs work best for you? Thats the one thing in my tackle box I dont have a lot/enough of so I'm looking for some suggestions for what to buy....

I would go with dark colors greens browns blues and purples. One more thing i would add is try fishing the north side of the lake if possible. Strike king bitsy jigs are good. let us know if you catch that lunker. Oh yea one more thing fish slow if you think your going to slow go even slower early spring bass are still slugish but once they bite hold on.

Don't forget the light, not just the temp that gets the fish up from the deep. In a small body of water like you are talking about, a couple of days with warmer temps could get the fish going.

Try fishing a 1/4 oz or 3/8 oz white spinnerbait until you reach a bank that gets a lot of sun thru the day. Then breakout the jig & pig. Good luck, and be ready for the line to go tight, it maybe your only bite, all day.

Will do, next time I'm at the lake and I'm tired of the trout I'll give the bass a shot...
