I'll add in a request to try Izor Platinum. I've been using it for a number of years now and like it a lot.

Now back to the thread.... Personally I stick with the Max. UG, but maybe I'd swith to the P-line on my spinning rods based on this testing, or at least try it. I do have to change the UG often on the spinning rods due to line twist when fishing spinners.

I notice you disdain the use of the distilled water for testing. One of our differences may be that I avoid fishing for anything that might be floating in chlorinated water. I opted for the distilled. I attempted to control for as many variables as possible. Obtuseness from critics is a variable I have no control over.

I'm considering running these tests on an ongoing basis, since new lines are always coming out, old brands reformulated. Maybe readers can send me 20 foot samples of fresh line, and I'll keep a database. Methodology will change and improve along the way.

VHawk,
I went through a phase where I was measuring different lines with a micrometer and breaking them with a scale. It's interesting to see the difference between the stated specs and the actual measurements on some lines isn't it. I see you are testing Vanish. I'm surprised that's still on the market after all the bad mouthing it got. That's one I tested. I did use that line for a short time and didn't have the bad results that apparently many others had. When you get to it, just for the heck of it ,try lubricating the knot with smelly jelly when tightening. This made a substantial increase in breaking strength. Also take a look at a knot tied dry with a jewelers loupe. You will see why it got a bad reputation. I don't mean to go on and on about Vanish,I just thought it was interesting in it's peculiarities and bad reputation. Another weird line is Jinkai. It might be OK fishing out of a boat in the bay,but if you have to break off a snag you need about 50 feet of room to stretch the line before it breaks. It's like rubber bands. Although I've pretty much boiled it down to Ultragreen and Spiderwire Stealth for the fishing I do , I will be interested to see your results.

If you want your line added to the database, please send a fresh sample, at least 20 feet, along with the brand, date of purchase, and line size. If you send more than 20 feet, I'll make sure to update the tests as the process is refined.

Go ahead and mail them to:

Great info Vhawk, much appreciated!

Thanks for the hardwork. I wonder how some of the cheaper lines would hold up? Ande, McCoy, Charterboat etc...

VHawk,

Noone fishes distilled water,I've no monopoly on that constant.

I've no disdain for distilled water,as a means of personal hydration,I simply can't correlate it as a real world hurdle, for fishing line.

A 45 minute soak is moot.

As an aside,"obtuse" is my favorite float shape and I'm typically guilty of employing the obtusest of them all.

(We call them round.)

I was told by a long time tackle dealer that the way McCoy line made it's reputation was; they buy another brand in say 10Lb Test, then repackage it as McCoy and say it was the strongest 6Lb line on the market.

Several years ago,Cabela's had a run of Hi-vis mono wearing their name, that was amazing at 8lb test.

Still curious,as to who made it.

I don't think so. Hog seems to be pretty well behaved.

I like the Hog and his posts. He definitely has some strong opinions and likes to share them.

Heck, I'd kinda like to see him get out on the river and keep the fish posts coming.

A lot of you seem to fall prey to his bait.

Just keep the personal attacks off of this board, and we're all cool.

I'd like to see Hog stay around and contribute to this board.
