I live just across the river from Idaho. So I spend the money and get a out of state license. Idaho offers a two pole permit for all species (cost is $12). I grew up in MIchigan and you could use two poles there as well. What do you guys think of this idea for Washington and how could we get WDFW to go for it?.

J7,

WA had that for saltwater at one time. I'm not sure why it was discontinued, but I think it's because of fish allocation issues. As a fleet, the recreational fishery is able to catch its allocation of salmon with one rod per angler. I've heard of interest regarding freshwater lake fishing, where some anglers would like to troll two rods to fish two different depths until they dial in where the fish are.

To get WDFW to go for it, prepare a proposal and supporting rationale and submit it during the next regulation cycle change. We just had one, so it's about a year and a half off.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Sorry Dave. Product of my environment, rod and pole are interchangable to me.

How in depth do thes proposals have to be? Would we need a bunch of signatures? Would we need to show up in big group to support it?

I doubt it can happen over there. A couple of the fisheries would become such a complete cluster F&^r% Say, Below Bonniville Dam for example.. They are bad now, add 2x the rods and enough said

i'd be a proponent. as long as the catch limits stay the same what's the harm?

one should be able to use as many sticks as they want.

I used to fish two rods in the Pt Defiance area years ago. It made the difference a few times between coming home with one fish rather than none. As long as there are daily limits per angler, I don't see why it was discontinued. Several years ago I submitted a regulation proposal change to allow two rods per salt water angler as long as all people in the boat were licensed. Canada allows as many rods as you want as long as everyone has a license. The response to the proposal from the sport fishermen was as if I was requesting to drag a gill net behind my boat. Some of the published responses to the proposal were remarks like "if I learned how to fish, I wouldn't need two rods", "next he'll want to use a gill net", "if he cann't catch fish with one rod, what makes him think two help". There are quite a few hard headed self-rightgous people in our state who call themselves fishermen.

I brought it up a few months ago, but suggested it only for trout lakes and such...Would draw in a lot more $$$ probably, but tough to enforce and people would use two rods on the salt and rivers....

Sometime in the past 5 years, WDFW was looking for ways to increase funds. A meeting was held in Aberdeen, and other cities as well, so the general public could present ways for increasing $$$$$$ but help the general fishing public also.

At that meeting I made that exact proposal, allow those that wanted to "fish an extra rod" pay an extra fee. Here was the answer given by Jeff Koenings, Director WDFW.....This has been talked about in different meetings at WDFW, it has been decided that by allowing the extra rod, those fishermen would have a advantage over those that only fished with 1 rod........so we, WDFW, are not in favor of this proposal.

I even said "what's the big deal"?? Limit is 2 fish, what difference does it make if they are caught with 1 rod or 2 rods??

Quote "we need to move on" to other ideas.

I wish you well, many sportspople would like to be able to "fish 2 rods"........maybe someday???????

Its to bad they dont want that extra money. I would buy it every year.

How did Koenings get his job anyway? Is he voted there or appointed there? Seems like sportsman should be the ones who decide who is in charge of WDFW.

Here is his e-mail address koenijpk@wdfw.wa.gov. Maybe he would like to hear from the thousands registered here on PP.

I do get a Idaho licence but sometimes I like to head north to some good trout lakes in WA. Or go down the Snake, Drano, Potholes type of trips. When I get there I am used to fishing two poles at different depths, colors, and presentations. But with one pole you end up second guessing and switching to much or dragging the wrong set up for too long.

It would be great for fishing for Squawfish, which in turn may help Salmon...
