I have to notice that I seem to have become un-tolarant of many things. There was a time when I was 17 and the only things that mattered were Rock and roll, chicks and the frizbee under the seat of my car. I promiced myself I would always "be cool" with everything always, unlike my dad.
No I am old. I fish and golf and do adult things. I am also a narrow minded man much like my father. I don't like rap music, I don't care for baggy pants kids, I think soccer and T-ball and everyone wins is ruining our kids. I AM my father.
How did it happen.. WTF did I do wrong ?? I wanted to always be cool but just can't keep up. Whenever I come in the house and see Rap vidio on T.V ( you know " these are my bitches, this is my Chit " as a parade of hot booty chicks bump and grind and the gangster on the vidio sits in an endless parade of impossibly exspensive cars ) I have to ask myself.. did my dad hate Angus Young and Robert Plant as much as I dislike.. say.. 50 cent for example.
My how time goes by.

I have to ask myself.. did my dad hate Angus Young and Robert Plant as much as I dislike.. say.. 50 cent for example. Yeah, you're dad did. I Hate t-ball, doesn't matter the score soccer too.. That's why my kid tore it up in soccer, now plays football with passion, and only played t-ball one season. He now plays baseball almost like he plays football. My daughter is learning too. It sucks to lose, but it happens, try to win with all ya got. Just be part of your father, the part that hates rap videos. Oh, I hate the Ellen Show, Martha Stewart, Oprah, Dr. Phil, The View, morning news shows, Talk Soup. Thank god for Fuel TV, and Tred Barta.

Ditto what Stam said.. We can only hope the whole THUG thing won't be embraced by thier children when they grow old enough to rebel against them. By comparison, Our generations Rock & Roll seems harmless...As for Oprah, Dr Phil and the rest...PC feelgood warm fuzzy wimp liberals...(Don't let your child finish LAST!) Learn how everyone wins!!! Today on Oprah!!!!

i too fall into this catagory, i'm 41 now. still crank the house so loud the 13 year old runs to her room. thats how i know i'm still a rocken hard core rocker dad!!! hell yea!!! i hated rap back when it started. but i'll be honest and say i'd rather listen to run dmz than that bullshiat that kids seem to think is cool. i like to ask the high school punk asses this " so you buy this stuff huh? tell me if you can please, how do you relate to it? " wait for stumbling answer. then ask what instrument does the guy play? oh he doesn't? so he has no skill musically, he just runs his mouff right? and since your white, show how you dance to this?
but yea i'm getting grizzled, i noticed this a year or two back at a primus show. this punk ass kid kept running into me. i got tired of it and picked off the ground and body slammed him to the floor. he never bummed in to me again. but it made me actually think. am i actually to old for these kinda shows? now my old man would never have gone to a show like primus ever. so i think i'm still in the cool catagory.

Cool thread. My grandpa was an ass, my dad was an ass, I'm an ass. Pretty fuc%ing simple math. Where I've chossen to deviate from a long line of self-proclaimed "morally sophistcated ancestors" is in the open mind department.
My dad caught me with a Hustler mag when I was a kid and said, "Don't look at that unless you want to become gay." Even though he had Playboy and Penthouse stashed around the house, Hustler was "over-the-top" to him. Well, I've looked at far worse than Hustler during my life since then and I'm not gay. And even if I did turn out to be gay why would he give a fuc%? Because it would reflect poorly on him? Fuc% that. Be your own person.
He would have been appauled to find out the thought of fuc%ing a chick in the ass turned me on as a teenager. [It still does]. Why? Because asses are for shi%%ing and vagina's are for fuc%ing. Whatever. If it feels good do it.
I remember him once telling my sister if she ever came home with a Negro he would disown her. Why? Is some white asshole that beat her a better choice than a goodhearted black man? I don't think so. Judge people by who they are on the inside.
I won't go into his stand on Mary Jane, I've belabored that enough here on the board and you know my stand. I do however, often wonder if he had been pro-weed if I would have renounced it's use as a form of rebellion. We'll never know.

Me too. Wanna have some fun. Tell a 14 year old boy he can only come 150 times in his lifetime and watch his brain melt down as he stands there doing mental math with this stupid look on his face.

I'm like my old man in just a few of his ways...........hopefully the good ones. His good points......hard-working, tough, good friend, and determined. His bad points..........selfish, crappy dad, crappy grandfather, and did I mention selfish?
But he was a tough s.o.b. I've pulled him off guys on the side of the freeway, restaurants, golf courses, etc, all the while he's punching their faces in. I could tell a million tales, here's a couple of favorites: He's teaching Drivers Ed, three teens in the car, a guy pulls up in a pickup next to them at a stoplight. The guy rolls down his window and says, "why don't you teach them dumb kids how to drive!" and pulls away. My dad tells the 15 year old girl to follow the guy. She does, for miles and finally the guy pulls into his driveway. My dad gets out and decks the guys before he can say anything. Cuts the guy cheek with the punch. Grabs him and drags him back to the car and makes him apologize to the kids.
Another........I'm following my dad in my car on 405. A guy cuts him off and dad honks his horn. The guy flips him off. Bad call. Traffic backs up and stops. I set the brake, my wife asks me what's going on. Before I can answer, my dad has the guy's head by the hair layed over the driver's door and is thumping him like a watermelon. I grab dad and off we go.
Last one.............he's driving his pickup and slows down for a stoplight. Punk and his girlfriend cut him off in their hot rod. They laugh and flip him off. The light is now red. My dad yells out, "in a hurry M*#&er Fu#$er? Then puts his truck bumper on the back of the guy's car and pushes him into the intersection. The chick is screaming, the guy is trying to brake, but the truck is too powerful. The guy finally peels away into traffic.
My old man fought in carnivals(1950's). Was recruited to fight Golden Gloves, was 5'10" 190 and could bench press 400#. And had the anger of rabid gorilla. Try growing up with that. He once told me when I was 15 that if I ever did drugs, he would nail me against a wall without a hammer. I didn't do drugs.
Between my dad and ex-wives I could write a book.

I'm still waiting for you to do the "ex-wife math" in the "Evertime" thread on the main page.

I'm still cool....just not as cool as snakes dad, I'd buy that man a beer just to not get whumped As a kid my dad pretty much stayed out of the way, unless I gave him a good reason not to, he came to all my basketball games and track meets and seemed proud of me, not working was never an option, he layed a good foundation of right and wrong and let me build on it, he went out of his way to NOT give me anything, he let me screw up and then clean up my own mess, he had no sympathy for stupidity and I've never expected or given any since, to this day I have probable spent more time fishing with him than anyone else ..... good thread, it's made me think. I am pretty much my old man 25 years ago, I hang out a little closer to the edge than he did, but not by much......I'll be happy if I'm doing what he's doing at 70, he went on an epic alasksan moose hunt (do it yourself) last fall, even packed out his own moose 'cause his partner was a geezer, who knows what he'll be up to next...he's still going.

My Dad (RIP)was on his own from the age of 13. He was a Marine in WW2, a logger in the 50's, owned a gravel pit where I worked when I was 13 & 14, a single family contractor and a real estate broker and developer. My Mom was his high school sweetheart and Blackfeet Indian, which, in 1941, which caused racist issues to come up occaisionally. He was a stud and was also one of the coolest guys around. Dad just died last December at 83 years old. He had already bought his tickets to Acapulco to see his local fishing buddies that he'd gone out with for 25 years. I never heard him put down anyone based on their race, clothes style or haircut. As fair as I am aware, he gave everybody a chance to show their true colors but disliked cheats, unethical people, of which there are plenty in the real estate business, and people that backed out after giving their word. When I bought my first 45, Carl Perkins Blue Suede Shoes on the Sun Label, in 1956 and played it along with Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Big Joe Turner on my box type record player too loud, my Dad would ask me to turn it down but never dogged me about the music. My Mom went to UW in 1940 in the music program so we always had music going in the house. When I was in a singing group in high school, he made sure we had a place to practice. He was always tolerant of other people from a "walk a mile in their shoes' viewpoint. He taught all 8 of us kids how to hunt, fish and how to survive in the woods. When I came back from Viet Nam, he apologized to me for not talking me out of going as he had realized while I was in how big a mistake the war was. I've realized over the last 20 years how lucky I am to have had a Dad like him. I'm 61 now and his teaching me by example was the best thing I've ever had going for me. Yea - being like my Dad is the best thing I could think of. Oh yea- about the baggy pants and the rap music - it's all just show and really don't mean shiat in the long run.

Don't get me wrong, my dad has many many good qualities that he passed, or tried to pass along to me. I love him dearly. He's talented beyond belief. That stuff I take for granted. It's the control-issue, intollerance and social-status type baggage I'm trying not to carry around.
