Went shrimping today and between pulling pots, i was able to cast a line for some cutties. Only got to try two spots but there were a few fish around. started at slack low and raised a lot of fish to my popper, only getting one hooked solidly. Probably raised around 20 fish over the hour or so that i actually fished. got 5 or so hooked up. Pretty good way to spend some time on the boat.
If you have never tried fishing a popper before you should give it a shot. It is a great searching pattern and although you might not hook as many, you will locate far more fish and the visual of fish on the top is great \:\)

if you plan to use it in the salt i suggest a very fast 5wt. and an outbound line.

I would like to fish poppers but dont you need a floating line? My 5wt only has clear intermediate sinking. I do have a 3wt with floating line but that might be a little small, I have caught a lot of residents and cutties on it in the salt so I might try it. Where coud I find some cuttie poppers?

Yes, a floating line is needed when fishing poppers.

I HATE TFO... i think they are a POS.

Take a look at Redington. They have some very nice rods up to about $300 and are a great company to deal with should anything go wrong, located here on B.I. The CPS is a little more than 250 but a great rod. I know plenty of people who fish their other offerings happily as well.
