hey anyone able to nail down an issue date for me?
In need of the STS article by Bill Herzog on Mooching for salmon. Summer king salmon namely.
He talks about Sekiu, Neah Bay and Westport and has some good info in the article. I gave my issue to someone who trashed it.
Would like to get that issue ordered up through Amato Publications if still available.
Got saltwater salmon on the brain.
Getting tired of eating blue-smoke trolling these days. Time for a new angling game.

thanks,
Lofty

Get ready for dogfish, You may want to save a little coin on the mag and roll it over to stock in Gamakatsu, or Owner.

Cheers,

Matt

Mooching won't catch you more salmon than trolling... it's just a more fun way to catch salmon!

In other words...If you ain't gettin' 'em trollin'... you probably won't get 'em moochin' either.

Too funny......

I love the way a guy gets treated asking an honest question around here. I take a look in my back issues, might take a while I've got a stack of them.

What a batch of smart-ass's.

The STS issue you really need is april 07, The JD Richey report on Baltavia is just amazing.

Chrome 22,
I gave good mooching advice. I am sure Lofty will find his STS issue in question. I too would have to delve deep into my STS archives to find the issue.

i don't know about that, if you find a school you can have multiple hookups in short order. that tends to happen more around july and august, though.

mooching for blackmouth is tough any more, the fish just aren't there in numbers.

I don't agree with this. I believe mooching is a superior method of fishing for salmon.

As for the issue of STS, I now have a beer in hand and will take a look through my milk crate of STS.

I remember a STS issue from 94 that talked about a i think gilly plug cutter. Seemed like it worked.

Anyway at the time the only mooching I had done was in CA threading baits hanging them head down. I have no idea why it works so well down there. But let tell ya we smacked them. I have talked to guys who have tried it up here but not had any success.

Looked but no luck, time for bed.

You know, I just read that article the other day.

I think it's in a 2003 issue with a bearded Mike Laverty (OR guide who wrote the plug-fishing book) on the front cover.

Let you know when I get home later.

Yep, that be the one!

The June-July 2003 issue with Laverty on the cover proclaims "HERZOG IS BACK"

Quest for a King starts on page 32.

I wrote a Kenai piece in the same issue that appears on page 8.

Alright! thanks for the assistance so far. Keep it going !
I like Herzog's writings. He has a way of keeping you encouraged during those dry spells and giving very technical information all in a light hearted manner while keeping your interest. I like STS but allot of the reading is filler articles.
If you guys confirm which issue it is fire it on down my way!
I called STS directly and the gal pretty much said, "sorry we dont have time to flip through magazines here looking for particular articles." Made it sound like Nick Amato is running a real business down there. I was Almost impressed....

I'm pretty much born and raised a troller, but would like to expand the whole saltwater salmon fishing experience a bit by switching it up with mooching on occasion.
Would like to mooch more during those large Spring tides when seaweed's thick. That seaweed and flotsam can make a long day of trolling with 12lb balls on manual riggers fishing black-mouth depths.
There is something special about your boat floating down along the tide rips with the engine off working mr. and mrs. nookie liars realizing your cut plug is still down there spinning like a top without the aid of a kicker.
Might save some coin on gas this summer incorporating in more mooching time too.

Thanks,
Lofty

Man! It sure is funny how people ALWAYS respond to what they THINK you said... instead of what you REALLY said.

I wasn't being a smartass... NOR was I saying that mooching doesn't work.

Wha I said was: On a typical day... with the amount of salmon we have left in south Puget Sound... if you're NOT catching fish trolling effectively... droppin' a herring down isn't gonna magically fill your limit.

If the fish are there... you have an equal chance with either technique. Trolling however is a MUCH better searching technique.

Lofty made it sound like since he wasn't having much luck trolling... that reading Herzog's article and mooching instead would catch him more fish... and I hate to say... but that just ain't the case.

Your opinions I'M SURE will vary however...

No problems! I appreciate your feedback and agree with you.
This season I stepped up to a bit roomier boat with farther range so want to try more techniques and locations. Kinda 'expanding the horizons' so to speak.
I want to try some mooching off Pt Defiance and get in the middle of the mooching crowd. It's always looked interesting and have tried it on a few occasions. I did not see a single doggie hooked last weekend by the moochers. Let's hope the herd hasn't moved in yet!
Have a good one out there this weekend and thanks for everyone's feedback. Tides look great.

Fish-On!

Jake there is a story about that article, But basically my fishing partner aka "Baxter" calls me up and told me I had to read the article. He started reading it and became so excited that even though he knows one of the dudes holding that big king he swallowed the bait.

He was pissed at JD, whom he knows and called him up. I guess alot of guys swallowed that one.
