Anyone besides me ever see the Jack Black / Will Ferrel skit on SNL " The Bass Off".. Each claimed to be the greatest bass player in the world so they had a Bass off where each took turns laying down nasty bass licks trying to best the other.. freaking funny, and sort of set the tone for what Mingo said.. Bass players are just sort of there.

Les Claypool is far from "just there". That dude just plain rips.
As their fans say "Primus Sucks!". And yeah, I'm a fan.

Steve Harris from Iron Maiden or Cliff Burton from Metallica Both wrote most the music for thier respective bands at least Cliff did until he died. They both kick F&**(()in' ass though.

This was just brought up in another forum in reference to Paul McCartney as being an overlooked talent on the bass. I'm going with Flea and Bootsy. Bootsy was only 18 when JB brought him onboard. Whatever anybody thinks of James, he did know players.
In a non-rock category - 1/2 of the Riddim Twins - Robbie Shakespeare is certainly one of the most recorded as it's estimated he's been on over 200,000. tracks.

Top bassist, here's mine.
1. Geddy Lee. My not have the vocals, but thumps on the bass.
2. Steve Harris, play's it like a geetar.
3. John Paul Jones. Dude was NO way the weekest link.
4. Gene Simmons. Enough said.

Somewhere down lower, Les Claypool.

That's "Kiss Alive 1 & 2 " Brewer. And yes Gene Simmons as a bassist isn't too keen. As a showman? One of the best.

Here's my list,parroting some others,some not.

1. Billy Sheehan

I can't believe this guy is getting skipped over. He is a rock bass god.

2. Geddy Lee.

Love him.

3. Les Claypool.

Got to meet him, have a sighned photo from a show which my buddy took,he can do damn near anything.

4. Steve Harris

Pure Metal!!

5. Chris Squire

He was badass.(From Yes)

6. Stanley Clarke

This guy is why Claypool and Flea have careers.

7. Lemmy

C'mon,it's freakin' LEMMY!

8. Cliff Burton

When he died Metallica began to suck ass. Nuff said.

9. Flea

The guy is good. He gets a 9 though.

10. John Entwistle(better than McCartney)

These guys were never just "there". That's just an unknowledgable statement musically. This list could go on,these are my favorites. Not all bassists have big profiles. Judas Priests Ian Hill doesn't do much, but without him there would never have been a Priest. I'm babbling~AA

Since this is a fishing site I wanted to include Mike Gordon from Phish but......

So nevermind.

RVW

PS----I love the part about him being held by the fathers "associates".
