A dog I used to have got really sick from eating raw salmon, and almost died. Vet said it was Salmonella. True story. I don't let my current dog get near raw salmon.

they can get a parasite, it's a liver fluke. you gotta watch out for them licking carcasses as well. don't let dogs eat salmon.

I believe it's called Salmon Poisoning Disease and it is the real deal. Lethal to dogs if not caught in time. As said abve, don't let your dogs near Salmon.

If you fish much with your dogs its bests to let them get it. It takes about 3 days for it to show up. Call the vet and let them know that the dog got into some fish and they can tell you what to do. I used to duck hunt a lot and there was always dead fish around so when I got a new lab the first thing I did was let them chew on a fish. That way I knew when they got sick what it was. Once they get it chances are they will never get it again. I've been told they can never get it again, but I've also been told that different river systems carry different strains. I've never had a dog get it twice. The one I have now seems to be imune to it, she's licked the blood of many a fish and hasn't come down with it yet. I've had the pills for a couple of years waiting for her to get it.

fishhead, that's nuts. the parasite is a flatworm, not a virus. your dog won't acquire immunity from being exposed. the fact that your dogs haven't gotten it since is pure luck. it's also easy to misdiagnose as parvo as well, so you're rolling the dice. not every fish has the parasite, not every dog will get the disease, but don't intentionally expose you dogs to a potential fatal disease.

Just telling you what my vet said and my experience. I've had 6 labs, all of them had salmon posioning, once, never got it again, all chewed on fish after having it. All my friends do the same, let their dogs get it once. Dad's dogs have gotten it once, they live on a river, the dogs are eating fish all the time when it floods. I just tried calling the vet, but they didn't answer.

It's actually a rickettsi type microbe, and it's borne by the flukes that are resident in the salmon, steelhead, or trout. So techically they can acquire immunity to it but I've heard there are three different strains of the microbe so it's ill-advised to rely on immunity. Get them on tetracycline at the first sign of loss of appetite if they've been exposed in the previous 5-10 days.

ok, i did some more checking and found an article in a veterinary immunology journal. dogs can acquire immunity to the neoricksettia helmenthoeca, its a coccobacillus which causes the disease. I appologize for calling you out! i'd still be careful as it appears (ala starfish) that there may be isotypes floating around.

sorry,
willy

I usually fish without my dog, but that day we were just out walking and checking holes. Didn't see a single person up or down in a 1 mile stretch so let her run and explore.

She is never interested in eating Salmon, raw or cooked. She won't even eat french fries or potato chips!

That day was the first time I have ever seen her interested in chasing fish, maybe she just started noticing them, but it was funny when she actually caught one and didn't know what to do when it started slapping her in the face. She dropped it and she was like Wha! I pointed and said "It went down there!" She ran down and started chasing a bunch of them around in the shallow water. I had fun videotaping the whole thing.

FYI-
_____________________________
Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal condition seen in dogs that eat certain types of raw fish. Salmon (salmonid fish) and other anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream to breed) can be infected with a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola. Overall, the parasite is relatively harmless. The danger occurs when the parasite itself is infected with a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. It’s this microorganism that causes salmon poisoning.

“Salmon poisoning occurs most commonly west of the Cascade mountain range,” says Dr. Bill Foreyt, a veterinary parasitologist at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He adds, “Canids (dogs) are the only species susceptible to salmon poisoning. That’s why cats, raccoons and bears eat raw fish regularly with out consequence.”

Generally clinical signs appear within six days of a dog eating an infected fish.

Common symptoms of salmon poisoning include:

vomiting
lack of appetite
fever
diarrhea
weakness
swollen lymph nodes
dehydration

Salmon poisoning is usually fatal if not treated If untreated, death usually occurs within fourteen days of eating the infected fish. Ninety percent of dogs showing symptoms die if they are not treated.
Thankfully, salmon poisoning is treatable if it’s caught in time. A key to its diagnosis is telling your veterinarian that your dog ate raw fish. If you have a dog that wanders, or raids trashcans and you are unsure of what it’s eaten; consider the possibility of salmon poisoning. Salmon poisoning can be diagnosed with a fecal sample or a needle sample of a swollen lymph node. Detecting the parasite’s eggs as they are shed in the feces confirms its presence. The rickettsial organism can be detected in a needle sample from a swollen lymph node. The combination of symptoms, and the presence of parasite eggs or the rickettsial organisms, are enough to justify treatment.

If caught early, most dogs respond rapidly to treatment Given the severity of the condition, treatment is relatively simple. Your veterinarian will prescribe an antibiotic and a “wormer”. The antibiotic kills the rickettsial organisms that cause the illness, and the wormer kills the parasite. If the dog is dehydrated, intravenous fluid are given. Once treatment has been started, most dogs show dramatic improvement within two days.
_______________________________________________

Salmon Poisoning is similar to chicken pox in that once exposed and treated, most do not get sick from it again. But due to diffences in strains from one watershed to the next, it IS possible for them to become sick again even if not likely.

I believe that tetracyline is most often used to treat it and many of my friends who have dogs and fish keep some tetracyline handy in case any of the dogs show symptoms.

Humans can get it from eating raw salmon that has'nt been frozen or smoked. My dog got it once and to my knowledge never touches dead salmon anymore. She was miserable for a few days and I was miserable cleaning up the speedy browns,-TBJ
