I've got a million of those growing in my backyard. I think they are edible.... but not sure enough to eat them. Would be nice to know what an expert thinks....

Well if it a portabello...which I suspect they are..they are expensive and tasty...pan fired with garlic/butter or oiled and grilled work best...

I'm not sure if this "portabello" looking one also has an evil poison twin which looks like it but cause bad things...

I'm not sure about those, but the little brown ones that grow in clumps and have a blueish/purple ring around the stalk are tasty, and go great in the receipe I use for "Inlaw Spaghetti"

KIDDING!

Those do look like Portobello's. I'd suggest going to the grocery store and buying a couple portabello's and doing a side-by-side on smell, appearence, THEN taste..

I don't think they are potobello's, although they do look similar. One thing to consider is that even if they are edible, I wouldn't eat any shrooms that are growing in an area that has recieved weed or grass chemicals.... I like the inlaw spagetti recipe sky!

Dude,if you don't either have a book,or someone thats absolutely,positively sure they're edible don't eat it.

There are tons of mushrooms that look just like an edible, but will either kill you or wish it had.

Seriously?
You want someone on the internet to tell you if it's safe to eat a mushroom in your yard!!!??

...Don't do it dude. Or: Yeah, no prob it's fine... (honestly)

Go buy a book on mushrooms. Audubon Society Guide is a good one. Narrow the choices by following the guide meant for this purpose. Do a spore print. If you can't do that, DON'T EAT IT. Mushrooms are not always easy to identify. If you have doubts, DON'T EAT IT. Very, very doubtful it is a Portabella. Go buy some from the store. If it isn't obviously one of the well known edible varieties which could grow in one's backyard, It probably isn't choice even if it is edible...

...good candidate for "life beyond".

As much as I'd love your Spaghetti, I gotta say:

The same "species" of shroom can look VERY different depending on the conditions that created it. Side by side comparison could be very misleading. In my local store, the chantrelles in side by side comparison don't even all look the same. Also, smelling a mushroom will cause a plethora of micro-organisms to enter your nasal passage (don't sniff too close!).

Probably Aragicus Campestris, which is similar to the common store bought mushroom, though it could be Agaricus Augustus (also known as the "Prince"), one of the finest eating of all wild mushrooms. If it is the Prince, the flesh when crushed should have a distinctive almond or marzipan-like odor. We eat these regularly.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, THERE ARE MANY AGARICUS SPECIES WITH SIMILAR APPEARANCE THAT WILL MAKE YOU SICK. UNLESS YOU HAVE A QUALIFIED FUNGOPHILE IDENTIFY THEM IN HAND, YOU SHOULD NOT EAT THEM.

SIMILAR-LOOKING ARAGICUS SPECIES THAT OCCUR LOCALLY AND ARE POISIONOUS, BUT WITH SUBTLE APPEARANCE DIFFERENCES (INCUDING LACK OF ALMOND ODOR, OR PRESENCE OF A FOUL ODOR OR STAINING OF THE FLESH WHEN BRUISED), INCLUDE Agaricus placomyces, Agaricus praeclaresquamosus, Agaricus xanthodermus, and several others. The results of eating a poisonous variety of Aragicus include sweating, flushing and severe stomach cramps.

Dood, do yourself a favor and go down to the safeway hole and get those badboys there. Pine boxes are lonely from the inside.

I have some Liberty caps growing in my yard...those were the days :>) Actually there are very few Shrooms that are deadly but you only have to be wrong once. My dog at a small one while taking him for a walk last fall ,he gobbled it down before I noticed what the hell he was doing. Later that night he threw up twice but was ok afterwards.

Damn - this one has VHawk written all over it. \:\)

IMHO not worth it if you're not sure. I've grilled a few chantrelles I found in a nearby pine grove, but they're distinctive enough not to be confused with any poisonous varieties.

Bon Apetite,

Brian

I had some shaggy Manes in my yard a couple of weeks ago. There is a mushroom society locally that would love to help.

There's only one kind of mushroom I ate that wasn't store bought. Not sure if I'd recommend that, but I would definitely recommend you do not eat something you aren't sure of. That goes for more than just shrooms . Good luck!

Sorry not a portobello. Good news is though that it's also not a two minute'r. I'm curious to know, is it just because they're growing in your yard that you want to eat them ?

Took a hike a couple weeks ago out on the OP and walked into Alice's Wonderland... About six different, stunning species growing in harmony in a sun-finger ray corridor, all edible... Although if you did eat them you'd probably still be out there thinking you were Pan, a sprite or a piece of moss !

Good luck with your decision Bongo.

You can eat anything once, the trick is being able to eat it again. With that being said I wouldn't try it.
