In June '08, family is planning trip to Cancun Mexico. Never been there but wondered if there was any good fishing in the area?

From brochures and web searches, it doesn't seem to be known for its fishing. Anyone been there? Fished there? If so, where, what, when, how?

NRH,

About an hour south of Cancun is Tulum, a small town (way cooler than Cancun) at the road that leads out the long peninsula on the Bay of Acenscion. There is good flyfishing for bonefish and permit and other flats species. I can't recall the names of the places or lodges out there offhand, but it wouldn't be hard to look up. There is limited access for DIY, but it's possible especially if you can bring even a small inflatable.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

I was in Tulum in June of this year. Best Vacation I ever had, We rented a house just North of Tullum for a week. (2weeks next time)

There was so much stuff to do besides fishing I never fished. The house was rented through Loco Gringo. The house was on Soliman bay.

Anyway if you go to loco gringo, you can find a link to fishing. I want to catch a rooster fish and after finding out there wern't any, I lost intrest.

Also don't book your tickets too early, when we purchased our plane tickets, you could not fly non stop from Sea to Cancun. Going through customs in LA is LAME,LAME,LAME.

Back in '97 I stayed at the Cuzan Guest House. Google it for info. Great bone fishing that time of year. If you look around and find a guide directly rather than through a lodge you can save big $. The lodges I talked to 10 years ago were charging $150/person, and the guides were getting about 10% of that....

The area north of Cancun offers good Tarpon fishing. I know a few folks that have fished it. It is about an hour or so drive to get to the fishing. Most the guides will pick you up and drop you off after fishing at your hotel.
Here is a link to some of the fishing available there.

Good luck,

We were looking at Cancun this year, but Corey's parents (AKA babysitters) wanted somewhere they could fly directly from Anchorage ... so it's Maui again. Thanks for the links, maybe we'll head that way next winter ... would love a spot with a little better fishing ops, but I'll take warm any day of the week come late Jan!!
