if i had to live with 1 rod, it'd be a lamiglas X86MTC. it works for everything from summer runs to fall kings and chums.

Thank God this is just a hypothetical...what would I do with the other 30 steelhead rods I own if I had to just use one?

Only one rod because I am stranded on a island would be a 1265C

Only one rod because it's my true love would be a 1084C

The 1025C is more versatile then the 1084 but the 1025 is just to dam short.

Now Dave D bitch session 100 as to why they don't make a gall darn 1085C

1025c....and Avid's Avatar!

I would have said the Sage 290, but I have never hooked a big nookie with it, and I don't know if it really has enough backbone for the big nooks.

Seemed to work fine on a big 23 poundish Queets steelhead.

If it does have the backbone, I'd change my vote to the Sage 290.

That extra length goes a LONG way for spinners, spoons, and floats.

If I were stranded on an island, I'd look at a 1-piece rod. Really hard to break those. 2-piece rods, not so hard.

When my 290 was new, the 2nd and 3rd fish I hooked on it were LATE kings(I was fishing steelhead). One in the low 20's, the other high 20's. It did a sufficient job on them....Enough that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable hooking another one on it.

Neal, I like the way you think......

Back to the 1 rod for all seasons, Sage 390 popped to mind.

Its a big tough stick, might not be a light wand of pure joy to fish on brats, but you whould never be out-gunned even on the biggest KING.

The 290 is sweet, but just a bit light, IMX 1025 naah, Cert. Pro X96 JC great all around rod.

Abu's 1143 IMX, I'd fish it if I could get it away from him.....

Now with that all said........I'll take this 1 ROD.

1/2-1 3/8

Tough one... But I'll hang my cape in the Batson/Rainshadow camp this season.

1143 XST spinning for summer.

1264 XST casting for winter.

Sage 290 even though I only have a 286 and a 386 I have a 290 on the wish list though! I'm pissed I just didn't go with that one back when I made the 286 & 386 but I'll get a 290 too.

Another vote for a Rainshadow 1264. I'd rather be heavy handed with the summer steelhead then out gunned by a fall chinook.

My favorite rod is Rainshadow`s XST 1141 4#-8#. My second fav. is the Rainshadow IST 1142F 4#-10# it`s the winter time and heavier water rod . It`s good for steelhead and most Salmon including fishing from the bank. For large kings either drifting from the bank or boat it`s the Rainshadow IST 1143f. If I had to choose one rod out of the three it would be the 1142.

I own 40 some rods. Several are much more expensive, but I think the best one over all for everything is the:
Shimano Convergence
CVS-L 100M-2 10.5' in length
Medium Power
Slow Action
