I also use the cheap pliers in the boat and in my fishing vest. Shoot some WD 40 on them once in a while and they last a year or two. I vacuum sealed a cheap set of sockets and some screw drivers and wrenches for my boat emergency supply, they that way the they are in decent shape if I need them. For cutting spectra I have a pair of good scissors that I bought at Michaels crap (er I mean craft) store (my wifes and my money's second home). They have a coupon on thier ads for 40% of any one item so you can save some cash and get a good pair of little scissors that slice through spectra line like butter.

I dont care if its a $2.00 pair of scissors or a $120.00 pair of pliers. I will tie a lanyard to them and then tie them to my fishbag or my vest. I have seen too many pairs of scissors, pliers, rolls of lead on the river bottom. I also take the time to fish them out also. Lanyards home made or store bought are the way too save money and tools.

I received a pair of Abel pliers from a buddy for a birthday gift. They run around a $120.00 or so back then with the leather sheath and lanyard. I had always wanted a pair of these, especially for when flyfishing for cudas, sierra and other toothy critters with wire.
After using them, they are way over rated for the price they get for them. Blades dull quickly and rust even after rising. I can easily get the same performance out of a $12.00 pair. No more expensive pliers for me.

If you want to check out expensive pliers, check out the Van Staal's.

I have one pair that were cheap initially, $16.00, but I can never find a pair when I need them so I get another pair. Final tally has yet to be determined. \:D

Years ago I found a pair of stainless steel pliers at night at blue creek. I had been all alone for the last 3 or 4 hours so they became mine. The name said they were made in England, but I can't remember it. They were the sweetest pliers I ever felt, shiny and moved incredibly easy. Forgot about them in the bottem of a wet bag and found them encompassed in rust. Soaked them in WD40 over night and they were shining, brand new looking agian. Of course, I lost them too, so I am with the $2 to $10 crowd

Never spend more then $10 or so on them. If I lose them or they get messed up beyond WD-40 treatment, in the dump they go. And I don't have to worry about losing them or anyy of that. I'd rather splurge on a rod or reel rather then a set of pliers...l

I use the long nose, curved tip pliers designed for pulling brake springs...excellent for the long reach over the side necessary to release fish in the water. These are less than $15 at your local auto parts store. WD-40 soak periodically frees em up, followed by a bit of ARMORALL to really get em back to 100%.

The CIA has the most expensive pliers. $1.6 million if I remember.

I've never paid more then $15.00 for fishin pliers.I still run with the original leadmasters with the real thin split ring tips. They just don't make them like they used to.The newer one's will split the ring open and make it stay that way.Good luck,

Rapala has a a couple of different length pliers that I have been using for years. They have a decent hand grip, a cutter, and a split ring end. I like the longer set better than the short, but both work well for the money. They cost something like 12 - 17 bucks and can be found at Sportco most of the time.

With all the plyers that have walked away from my boat in the hands of my "buddies," I can honestly say I own the most expensive set of plyers ever made. I should just give away a complimentary pair at dawn every morning. Tools for tools. JFC.
