I also use the cheap pliers in the boat and in my fishing vest. Shoot some WD 40 on them once in a while and they last a year or two. I vacuum sealed a cheap set of sockets and some screw drivers and wrenches for my boat emergency supply, they that way the they are in decent shape if I need them. For cutting spectra I have a pair of good scissors that I bought at Michaels crap (er I mean craft) store (my wifes and my money's second home). They have a coupon on thier ads for 40% of any one item so you can save some cash and get a good pair of little scissors that slice through spectra line like butter.

I received a pair of Abel pliers from a buddy for a birthday gift. They run around a $120.00 or so back then with the leather sheath and lanyard. I had always wanted a pair of these, especially for when flyfishing for cudas, sierra and other toothy critters with wire. After using them, they are way over rated for the price they get for them. Blades dull quickly and rust even after rising. I can easily get the same performance out of a $12.00 pair. No more expensive pliers for me. If you want to check out expensive pliers, check out the Van Staal's. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...=0030045119329a

Years ago I found a pair of stainless steel pliers at night at blue creek. I had been all alone for the last 3 or 4 hours so they became mine. The name said they were made in England, but I can't remember it. They were the sweetest pliers I ever felt, shiny and moved incredibly easy. Forgot about them in the bottem of a wet bag and found them encompassed in rust. Soaked them in WD40 over night and they were shining, brand new looking agian. Of course, I lost them too, so I am with the $2 to $10 crowd

Never spend more then $10 or so on them. If I lose them or they get messed up beyond WD-40 treatment, in the dump they go. And I don't have to worry about losing them or anyy of that. I'd rather splurge on a rod or reel rather then a set of pliers...l

I use the long nose, curved tip pliers designed for pulling brake springs...excellent for the long reach over the side necessary to release fish in the water. These are less than $15 at your local auto parts store. WD-40 soak periodically frees em up, followed by a bit of ARMORALL to really get em back to 100%.

Rapala has a a couple of different length pliers that I have been using for years. They have a decent hand grip, a cutter, and a split ring end. I like the longer set better than the short, but both work well for the money. They cost something like 12 - 17 bucks and can be found at Sportco most of the time.
