I think this is the sturgeon fishery, with incidentally caught salmon legal to keep...I wonder how many wild Willamette River Chinook they'll kill, not to mention wild steelhead?

Fish on...

This is actually a good thing. It drives home the point that our letters and visits, dont make a difference.

You can get mad and go away or you can join 2000 other people in washington and put people who belong to a particular organization in the pipeline to become commission members, then you pick a Director, who will accept a 400,000 dollar grant for fish traps and wheels.

Is that worth 25 dollars?

How about Game fish status for

Sturgeon
Halibut
Ling Cod
which bans the sale of those fish.
Would you like to see that?

How about having a voice in the re-licensing of a particular Dam?

How about a college scholarship for students who enroll in Marine science and fisheries degreed programs in our state. Well thats not a plan yet. But Texas passed the 2million dollar mark in 2004.

Thats what you do after you won the fight. But you have to be willing to pull the wagon.

"How about a college scholarship for students who enroll in Marine science and fisheries degreed programs in our state."

The Wild Steelhead Coalition does this now...even with our relatively limited bank account, we partially fund a graduate student each year who is working on steelhead related studies.

I wish we had more to give, but for grad students between grant cycles, even a few grand might be the difference between keeping a project going and having it go down the tubes.

The steelhead bycatch thing is what chaps my hide.
Staff at DFW is illequiped to see they are killing off the largest, most fit, members of the lower river tributaries to prosecute this commercial harvest. They continue to view each species in issolation.

Unfortunately, I think that they are perfectly well equipped to see that they are doing it...from my dealings with them over the years, especially when they were seeking to triple the allowable ESA impacts on those threatened steelhead runs, I think the problem is more that they don't find ESA recovery to be nearly so important as prosecuting the fishery.

Look, I agree the mindset is one of harvest.
We can not fire all Staff. I believe the Commission should axe Director Koenings to send the message to Staff that recovery and conservation should be managing factors for our public resource.

No need to fire all the staff...just the top layer or two...the lowly underlings no all too well how the stated policies and science don't jive too well with the de facto policies and plans.

I can't get away from work so I sent this to mailto:odfw.commission@state.or.us

 Quote:
Honorable Commissioners,

My name is Hans Mak. I am a sportfisher.

Please view the impacts on steelhead as well chinook, while developing direction for Staff.

I believe Staff is overly promoting a commercial method of harvest, no longer viable in the mainstem Columbia River. The mixed stocks, species taken are the remnants of distinct populations, too valuable to be wasted as bycatch.

I believe an allocation of <35% is more than enough to cover the Select Area impacts. This impact level should apply for both species.

Please direct Staff towards recovery of our public resource rather than continuing with the Status Quo.

Regards,
Hans Mak

Elect a govenor, who will give us more anglers on the commission. We need a commitment before we vote.

Our Governor did appoint a good chunk of the current Commission, and from what I've seen they are far more amenable to sportfishing and conservation than any other Commission over the past 20 years...far more.

Not only that, but she did it in spite of the fact that some of the biggest and most powerful pro-commercial legislators in Olympia are from her own party.

It is worthwhile to go in and read the Bios on the current commissioners.
