With all the rain lately, I thought you amigos would enjoy this Cabo report............ I'm going to have to chop this suckah up into bitesize chunks since there's a lot of pics...... after a long month filled with gumflapping BS and relentless pressure from the home office, arguments with the boss over my 2007 sales forecasts (execs seem to never let data and facts interfere with the goals they force me to commit to), budget hassles and firing a couple lazy employees, my wife and I decided to join some of our crazy friends last week in Cabo. Of course, Cabo is not universally loved............the place drives some people nuts for sure. We've always had a soft spot for it since we got married on Pedregal Beach there many years ago. It's noisy, the streets are crowded, it's full of timeshare scam artists and thousands of diapered toddlers selling chiclets..........but what the hell, we love the messy joint and at times, the fishing can still be pretty damn good. Now that we're both deep in our 40s, any chance to escape, kick back and damage some organs with tequila and some fishing is welcome. I didn't give a rat's azz what I caught.........I just needed to get the F out of Seattle for a rest. We were there on the heels of the Bisbee and smack dab in the middle of the Tuna Shootout. We saw a LOT of gringo tuna hunters roving the bars at night in packs. We also saw some fishermen........ day one saw us arrive late and bleary eyed after a long-ass flight, so we dumped our chit in the hotel and went down to The Office for a bite and some drinks......... After that my wife and I went next door to the Melia, where we've stayed in the past. They remodeled it last year and when we walked downstairs to the bar, one of the barmaids was shrieking something about "El Serpente, El Serpente Gigante!!!". I thought a big rattlesnake was slithering around.......................I was pretty freakin' close!!!!! Don't ever let this guy buy you tequila shots...........you'll never get rid of him!

cont........... the next morning, Mark and I took off after breakfast to do some fishing while the wives partied around the pool.......................since he just wanted to troll, we didn't book with a fly specialist. I've learned to adapt to pretty much anything and most of the guides down there at least know enough to get out of the way when a flyline zips around. I've had a lot of fun doing this. Mark is just learning to flyfish for trout so on this trip he opted to use the panga's chit gear. As usual, it didn't disappoint............corroded old rusty reels that look like they were used by Quint in "Jaws", slinky-esque 100 lb test mono that looked like it was spooled on in 1972 and rod guides that appear to have been used a couple decades on a truck winch. Perfect Mexican panga gear.......... I packed light this trip, just 9 and 12 wt sticks to keep things simple. Since you never know when you might run into a big bull dorado or cubera, I took the 12 out in the panga. we only went offshore about 2 miles and since they were trolling, I bucktailed a fly in the lure spread, joining Pedro's pool cue rods for two hours. We didn't catch jack sh!t, but I had some hits that kept chopping my gummies to bits..........I fed them three of these, I guess there were some sierra about. dammit, no wire bite leaders! The girls chilled around the pool while we fished........... We then busted over to Medano past hotel row to try a great spot in front of a rock formation where I've taken some nice jacks, roosters, hawkfish and a few pargo over the years. They hooked Mark up with 8" head-hooked live toro for bait. He caught one right off the bat about 10 pounds, so I figured out a fun way to capitalize on his baitfish. The baitfish would be swimming around right under the surface about 40 feet behind the boat, and you could clearly see when the roosters would come up for a look. I had a shooting head on my stick so I'd toss the fly out there when a fish appeared and start jerking the rod tip in 2' sweeps to make the fly dart around near the fish. Damned if it didn't work................when one rooster was attacking the bait, another one rocketed out of nowhere and slammed my fly. The fight was on.......

cont..... We took 4 more this size when a bigger fish appeared. I flipped my fly out, stripped line to put it equidistant to Mark's bait and started my jerking routine again. WHAP!!!!!!!! the rod doubled over and line started peeling like crazy. this is the bug he took..........Pedro picked this one out from my box of clousers, seaducers blah blah.......without hesitation. he was right! the rooster fought like it had a rocket in it's azz..........unbelievably strong for it's size................. You can see that Pedro got VERY excited when we landed the Pez Gallo .......... That night, some dinner and drinks at the best tequila bar in the world, good old Pancho's............................... the world's best tequila selection, bar none! The next morning we chilled over a good Mexican breakfast with a key requisite beverage............................

cont...... Then my wife DEMANDED to go out in a panga, just the two of us. Oh damn, don't you hate a woman who makes you go fishing? We went out looking for football tuna, bonito, anything on the Pacific side....................................... I had one good hard slam from a football yellowfin about 15 pounds. He sounded at the boat while my mouth watered for some sashimi, then the ******* pulled free while Enrique cursed, saying "phukk" a few times..... After a thrilling 90 degree aerial assault from a decent dorado that broke off after three seconds, we found some nervous water full of these little buggers. They were fun as hell, I had a hit every third or fourth cast for about 30 minutes straight........... ever notice how they always run straight for the prop? This was all the day held for us fish-wise, but it rocked. Warm weather, my girl, cold beer and some willing fish. Not biggun's but fun as hell. Enrique cut one up for chum. I had one nice 'cuda come up for a look but all he wanted was to eat the chum chunks. he just laughed at my fly mockingly................. that night we all went out to Digorgio's for the sunset, drinks and dinner. Great drinks, amazing views and ****ty food.....the full Digiorgio's treatment. The girls decided to pimp it up a bit........................my wife wanted my opinion of her dress on the balcony ....... "hey big boy, buy me a couple shots tonight and you might get lucky"......... I married a silly girl, what can I say.............. The gang at dinner.......................... the next day was pool and beach time. Then the following day Mark and I headed out to deeper water. I wanted something bigger on my new stick and even though fishing had been reaaaallllllyyyy slow everywhere in the area, we hoped for a nice yellowfin, dorado or maybe a sailfish. "dude, put that *** stick away. You aren't going to land anything on a flyrod out here". "Oh yeah? bite me, BIATCH!!! Oh, nice gay hat!!!"

"dude, put that gayboy fly stick away. You aren't going to land anything on a flyrod out here". "Oh yeah? bite me,!!!!!" while we head out, the girls get some breakfast............... After exactly one hit in two hours, a bill popped up and appeared in our lure and teaser spread. All hell broke loose as I scrambled to place my fly in the zone, but the fish would not take it. I'm thinking sailfish......he kept going back and forth between the lures and the teaser baits like a demented musketeer waving a sword. He started to fade away, but our captain was determined to avoid El Pepe Le Pew so he threw a hooked bait out to him. He sucked that thing down like candy in full view...........the ******* wouldn't touch a bunch of hair and feathers, how DARE he eat real food! Markie took over and used the poolcue like a champ. 45 minutes later he had this 130 lb. baby blue at the transom. It was a great day. It's the first time I've fished in Mexico with a blonde haired Spaniard for a baitboy. He and the captain kept telling us how ****ed up and incorrect the other guy's spanish was.....

cont..... Back to the beach to hook up with the gang for some celebration.............. that night, another feast at Pancho's...............this barrel of tequila gives a whole new meaning to "worm in the bottle"............yep, that's a freakin' rattlesnake in the agave sauce!!! You single dudes would have loved it, damn man, EVERYBODY was hooking up and getting jiggy right on the beach!!!! surf fishing sucked this trip, I only took three of these little buggers.... back to the rain..........

Great pics Mingo, looks like the trip was a blast. How can it be bad with fish, tequila, nice weather, Ron Jeremy, and D-cups!

Nice Mingo! Gotta love Cabo. Where were you staying? Almost looked like the Blanco or Rose. I was too much of a puss to order up a glass of this:

Looks like a blast. The wife and I went to Jamaica last June for a couple of weeks. We went way off the beaten track. No Cruise Ship Towns for us. They don't call it "The Murder Capitol of the World" for nothing. It wasn't too bad, we only got robbed once by a 6'8" Rasta. After that little crash course in Social Studies, Mexico looked like Monaco. Oh and the fishing sucks. They Dynamite fished those reefs for decades and poach them to hell, and it shows. Please tell us you had the good taste not to go to Margaritaville.
