I know this one has been beat up in the past, but I cant seem to find it on search. Ive always fished the GL3 blanks but am thinking about upgrading to the GLX or IMX in an 1141. Is the extra price worth it from a sensitivity and comfort standpoint, and is one incredibly less durable than another?

Weight, feel of the graphite, and durability are the only real differences. Oh yeah, and price.
IMO, the GLX is not worth the upgrade over the IMX in the 1141.

Is the extra price worth it from a sensitivity and comfort standpoint, and is one incredibly less durable than another? I went through this about 5 years ago... I'm one who enjoys fishing the best of the best but do not do the GLX's if you set the hook hard. These rods are made for the limp wrist fisherman.... I blew up 3 of them on hooksets through out the summer that I owned them. Granted they feel really good in the hand (sensitivity, sharpness of feel) but you'll spend more time plucking graphite from your face than fishing, at least I did. I now run IMX 1141's and rarely if ever break a rod. I just tend to donate them to the river on hook sets now. Keith

Heh. I got to watch Keith kiss a GLX on a hookset. I literally had to help him pick graphite shards out of his face. PS. I'd invest in a good set of durable sunglasses if you go with the GLX. Maybe at the price Loomis charges for them, they'd give you a free set of Maui Jim's!

He's down to 99. Recall that he tossed one in the drink last summer.

Parker,
I still have your spinning rod you let me borrow, don't forget to pick that up when you come down this year...

Thanks Guys I appreciate it, exactly what I was looking for, a couple hardcores that have put some serious time in with both sticks in their hands. While Im on the subject of spending my tax return, is there such a thing as an all-around hover/backbounce/kwik rod?

While Im on the subject of spending my tax return, is there such a thing as an all-around hover/backbounce/kwik rod? The "all around" rod depending on the size of water you are fishing in my opinion would be the Gloomis SASR1002C GLX. I love this rod and have yet to break one. You can hover or back bounce up to 8 oz of lead and fish kwikfish great with them. My favorite kwikfish rod is still the Gloomis 982C though. Although they're rated the same the GL3 tends to show a little more backbone than the GLX's.. Keith

Thanks Keith, I am having a hard time deciding which direction to go with the salmon rods, and what technique I will do more of. Former boat ho turned sled owner. Norbecks boat is getting to busy for me to ho seats during prime time so I had to break down and get one of my own-

I have or had all 3 1141s models from GL3, IMX, GLX (currently selling one on the classified board).
I can honestly say my favorite rod is the GL3, got the job done and I didnt worry about it getting beat up on trips where i'm hiking etc.
When I picked up the IMX I honestly felt a difference in terms of "crispness" of the blank, the IMX graphite seemed to react with a faster action and lighter feel.
I got the GLX because these 1141s are my favorite steelhead rods, i liked the higher quality guide components which made it lighter, the cool metallic blue thread on the base was a nice touch also.
To me these 1141s rods are so light I didnt feel much of a difference in the GLX, other than it already felt a little faster than even the IMX. (These rods are rated at slow, ultra light)
I believe the IMX retails at $355 and the GLX at $425 at $70 difference i'd put it towards putting that into a better spinning reel and even buying the GL3 model.
As for the GLX having breakage problems, no longer an "issue" to worry about, this was addressed about a year ago by G Loomis and were re-manufactured for improved durability.
You can't go wrong with any of them in my opinion. Great rods! GL3 if you want the job done, GLX if you want the best 1141s available.

My backup 1141 is a GL3 made by TH. I love the craftsmanship of the rod, but I hate the feel of the GL3 graphite (of this rod) in my hand.
As you mentioned, the "crispness" is just missing in the GL3....and it drives me nuts.
I honestly hate using my GL3.
I think a lot of it boils down to personal preference. I've put a million hours holding that IMX and anything else now, just feels wrong.
Your mileage may vary. Just my opinion.
