http://www.theolympian.com/101/story/50769.html The Press Conference is at 10AM this morning at Lacey City Hall. Looks like they had to sweeten the deal a bit, but it's now a sure thing.... unless they discover Injun bones on the site.

I hope we won't be dissapointed. I went to both Cabela's and Bass Pro shops in Texas last year and the Bass Pro shop had way more gear specific to Salmon/Trout/Steelhead that Cabela's did. Hopefully they'll gear up for the Northwest.

First I have to drive 45 minutes to get to a decent tackle shop, and now I'm going to have 2 of them within 15 minutes of the house? How in the hell am I supposed to save for my retirement? For the mortage? For food?

Looks like my Cabelas VISA card will get some more exercise when we come south to see the in-laws.
The new Cabelas stores are nice, but if you never had the opportunity to shop the original store in the old armory in downtown Sydney, NE, you missed an unique opportunity.

That is good news. I used to be concerned about the tax thing, but then I talked to one of the company's PR guys.
Cabela's operates as three separate companies...and retail stores are separate from the catalog store. As a result, state tax doesn't get charged on catalog orders. He said that the company won't go into a state that doesn't recognize that fact.
Having said that, with a new Congress in which the ruling party is more interested in taxes than the previous, I predict that catalog orders will be taxed fairly soon whether there is a store in the state or not.
Also, Cabela's just announced that they're building a store in Post Falls, Idaho, just east of Spokane.

Other then being a convenience for a people in close proximity to the new store location, what can Cabela's offer us that isn't already locally available???
Personally I'd rather go to a local shop like 3Rivers or Silver horde, OE, etc to get my gear. Usually they have a better selection anyways, definatley more knowledgeable staff. Furthermore, Does Cabelas support NSIA, PSA, RFA and other organizations working on improving fishing conditions for the sports angler in Washington?

Guess we'll find out when they get here. Most local shops will be competitive with them, I'm sure. When you factor in the gas for the trip and visit, it is usually cheaper to shop at home. Most sporting goods stores will do special orders, too. We do.

Check out their link to see who they are affiliated with. Some other links on the side of the page to look at. Don't see anything for RFA or PSA, but it won't hurt to ask them when they get here, if not sooner. http://www.cabelas.com/community-aboutus-conservation.shtml

If you have never been inside a Cabela's, I cant really explain, but I'll say this much, when you plan on going your first time, plan a full day of it. Its not so much an outdoor store..more of a museum/exhibition/gallery/statefair/tourist attraction/gunshop/grocery/furniture warehouse/electronics.... There was actually a shooting gallery in the one I went to in Hamburg, PA. It's an experience. Expect traffic in Hawks' Prairie to get far worse than you can possibly imagine, with alot of out of state plates and RV's and even more people who have no idea what a traffic circle is or what to do when they come to one..

The newcomers would have to understand those circles better than those already using them! What part of "Yield" don't they get?

Cabelas will receive 38 free acres and probably $15,000,000 in gov't subistise. I really feel sorry for the Mom & Pop's who have spent years building their businesses and helping the community (they didn't receive a penny).

The big catolog stores have been putin the hurt on the mom and pop stores for a long time now. I just bought a new rifle scope, online, and beat the dickens out of the catolog

Ichtyoid- I went to a Bass Pro shops and it seems like it would be exactly like a Cabela's. More then just a 3 Rivers. It is a whole experience. But I'm hooked with 3Rivers after my latest experience plus Lacey is a bit deep from my house...

Also worth noting that while they aren't necessarily a store mainly dedicated to fishing/hunting, GI Joes is going in this spring where the old Larry's Market was in Bellevue... We got a Sports Authority, but I still manage to make a lot of trips to Issaquah to get to GI Joes.
Neither of those stores provide any sort of help like a guy at a real fishing store would, but it's convenient anytime you gotta go pick up a few random things when you are pressed on time...
