Hey, saw that Breckenridge Outfitters are still there (google it, and check out the photo's page, all the hogs are from the "dream stream"....I checked, and the Fryingpan day was in september for the "rusty spinner hatch"...they commonly dump water in may, but if they aren't when you are there, could be an option.....Mountain Angler in Breckenridge apparently acquired 6 miles of river near Hartsel which was awsome, and is most likely quite awsome now, but guessing that could be pricey(but if you have money, could be guaranteed fun)....Bought my first real pair of waders from Jackson(owner) back in '85 or so, still use the wader bag/boot holder that he threw in to the deal with my $300 simms waders/borger boots.....Colby and Alex(breckoutfitters) started the Orvis shop there later and are my age or so(45) and are great guys. I just got back from a trip to Utah, and got to fish the S.F boise on the way home, and it got me going.....just checked the report from the "dream stream" and it's making me wish I was there right now....I've fished all over the rockies, and colorado holds at least 5 of my top 10 days ever(and could be more like 7).....enjoy...Tom

Lived in Colorado Springs from 80 to 89. Fished the Deckers area often. End of May should be just after lower mountain lakes have ice out. Always found plenty of easy acess around Deckers and plenty of fish could be seen however, not as easy to take they see presentation after presentation. If I remember correctly Denver proper had Fly water only in some of its lakes in town. Gold Medal water within 1 1/2hours of Denver any direction. Downtown had some excellent Fly shops --- very spendy but the information was free, they like to talk. End of May I would head into the mountain lakes for some hungry lakers, then head back to home via a few rivers for browns and bows.
Enjoy your stay the Front Range is great.

I was in CO for a week last year at just this time. Platte and Poudre were both blown out by snow melt, so I went to a high lake. I found Chambers Lake at about 8000', where the ice off was only about a week old. The locals told me that the Lake Trout (Mackinaw) cruise within 10 or 20 feet of the bank and bite aggressively. I went out in a pontoon, but a float tube will work if you have some serious insulation. Anyway, for once they weren't lying to a flat lander, because I hit a bunch of them along rocky shores with an intermediate line and cone head buggers. That's an option if the rivers are high.
