Will be camping June 30 - July 6 with my 9 year old boy. I'd like to do a little fishing but mostly just camping. I figure we'll use the truck as base camp and do a couple of one or two day overnights with backpacks. Any suggestions?

Pm's are fine if you don't want to give the goods up to the world.

Thanks

dave

I like Three RIvers. It's near Mora Beach if you want to hike and camp along the Ocean. Otherwise I would vote for any of the National Park Campgrounds if you want to hike in the mountains. I wonder what the snow level is like this year on some of the trails into the mountains? That might be worth checking through the Park Service before committing to one place or the other.

Enjoy the trip!

Lots of snow in areas that should be clear by now where I or my friends have been hiking. Beach hiking on the coast would actually be a good bet.

I use this link for updates on trail conditions: http://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/wilderness-trail-conditions.htm

Dave,
Lake Ozette is pretty cool, especially if you've got a boat that you can bring for some boat-in camping. With trails to the ocean, makes for a real nice and secluded camping. It has been quite a few years, but we didn't see anyone the 4 days we were out there - except when we hiked to the beach.
Have fun.

If you don't mind other folks, nothing beats Kalaloch. Some great primitive campgrounds on the upper hoh as well where people aren't such an issue.....

I used to like camping at Coho Resort in Sekiu. I hear it's closed now. But, the camping up on that hill was pretty cool. Nice grass to toss a ball around or frisbee, a fire at night, and the scenery if you just want to sit down and relax.

I often camped at Kalaloch when my kids were that age. Kids seem to love the beach - bring extra clothes; they love getting soaked. Also some tools and build a big ass sand castle. Also camping on the Hoh or Queets was something to look forward to, and I got to do a little fishing.

South Fork of the Hoh has a primitive campground and a hiking trail that starts there. The beaches at Ozette are great overnight hikes. Good luck.

Lake Ozette was good and the hike to the ocean to see the carvings left by the tribes is cool for the kids.
If you want a beautiful place without much fishing but a nice campground and somewhat away from people you should try Elk Horn up the Dosie. The road washed out so you hike up to it about two miles. Camp ground has all the needed stuff still adn not to many people do it. The hikes are really good in the area if you continue on up the road. River is nice too.

Coho Resort. We use it as a base camp to go everywhere.

I like to camp at any of the DNR campgrounds along 101, they are free and the have firewwod at each camp site, free. There is one on the Hoh river at Oxbow and one on 12 miles on the other side of Forks on the Soleduck. Suprisely they never seem to be full and are quite peaceful and both have good fishing acess.

I'd re-iterate So. Fork of the Hoh campground, there is another primitive one on the C-dub, and also Yahoo Lake (I think that is what it is called) is fun, if you can get there.

Kalaloch is super-fun, you can go down to the Queets to fish, if it is clear enough. Or just fish off the beach for surf perch. I do okay just throwing a fly early in the AM down in front of the campground.

Bring a skimboard for the kid, he will love that, if you have the weather for it.

Trying to skim across the river was a blast. I was the only one who made it across the longest part (there is a video of it somwhere). We had a huge crowd by the time it was over, below is my cousin about to wreck his shin because of a missed foot placement.

Chi Chi beach.
Salt Creek campground, if it still exists, by Joyce.

Haven't been to Chi Chi in twenty years and haven't been to Salt Creek since I was a kid.

Oxbow, Allen Bar, Kalaloch...........have stayed at all 3. Used to stop at Kalaloch 1st, if it was full.....would go to Oxbow, if that was full could always stay at Allen Bar.

Allen Bar is the quiet one.....have seen deer and elk while staying there.

Mora has a decent campground past Three Rivers down by the mouth of the Quil near the Dickey. Bring some extra tarps as it might rain heavily.
