This may have been a topic before, but what is your best/most effective over the counter, scent/attractant that you use for Summer Stld? I have used the old Dr. Juice for years with lots of success but my supply is about gone and it is no longer available? I am seeking a replacement. I like, and have used Mike's Shrimp Oil with inconsistent results. Thanks for any input.

I dont worry about scent too much for steelhead, but besides shrimp anise works.

I think a steelhead would bite a freshly smoked ciggarette but if presented correctly.

I once saw a guy on the other side at the Barrier Dam cut a set of wings out of a silver/red pack of matches cover. 1st cast 7# buck. No scent, just the paper wings. He did smoke so maybe it was the tobacco smoke smell.

i used to liberally douse all of my terminal gear in mike's shrimp oil in the past. looking back, it probably didn't help or hurt anything, but it gave me confidence.

The oil of Aphrodite and the Dust of the Grand Wazzu. Actually mikes shrimp or anise are my two favorites but I have heard good things about the squid as well.

Personally I'm not sure that it matters much for steelhead...... They're just a big stupid trout....

They hit flies tied with wool, floss, chenille, tinsel, chicken and other feathers, bucktail, and numerous synthethic fibers and materials - the scent of which all adds up to ???? Seriously, what won't a steelhead hit?

I honestly believe that nothing beats the real thing- bait. but if you run out, then it is nice to have some scent as back-up in your vest:

last weekend I ran out of eggs, so I looped up some EZ-eggs and dripped Pro Cure's shrimp/ prawn oil all over them... next cast and thump-thump-thump "FISH ON!" suprising that I had worked the entire hole with REAL bait and was just about at the VERY VERY end of the tailout. murky visibility and high water could have been the result of this one.

for plunking, I always use Mike's Glo-Scent, sand-shrimp flavor. the left-over smell of that stuff always reminds me of fishing (ie. left over sandshrimp piss smell?)

I also like Pro Cure's squid oil.

people used to use WD-40 on plugs and stuff.

Huh? Pautzke and Pro-Cure among others are still making the stuff. No need to go all black ops for a little krill juice smile

i agree with the fly fishing analogy. steelhead bang flys all the time with zero scent added. look at how many rise to the surface and bang a scentless fly. so scents i think can't hurt, but not a savior by any means.

Smelly Jelly Craw-Anise followed by Squid. This year I've had real good success with Krill-XTRA from Smelly Jelly. It's moving up the list pretty fast.
