The Alaskans are Ackley sluts.

.243ai, 22-250ai, .223ai, etc.

I'm thinking about a 280ai or 7-08ai in a 700 w/ a Lilja tube in a McM Edge stock.

I've got buttloads of .257 Bob and am thinking hard about puttin' together a .257 AI. Have just the right platform in a 700 that sits stock as a .243.

Pac-Nor at 22" and a MCM edge would make a nice light walking rig. Or maybe I'll buy another Montana in 7-08......

LoweDown----If you go with the .280AI let me know 'cause I've about 100 .280 cases I'd sell cheap.

what's the velocity differences between the 3 .257s if you know off the top of your head... AI vs Bob vs Roy?

you liking the kimber 7-08? what pills, 120s? ever thought about punching it ai? That dude WGM on the 'fire and asreal is waiting on his to get back from the smith, he's going to give me a report on the speed increase... i think he was getting around 3000fps w/ 120 TSX's before Improvement.

i've been thinking about jumping on the montana 7wsm bandwagon, as well, but i'll probably go for a custom 700.

i'm leaning towards lilja (over PN) cuz my cousin is a smith in MO and he gets a good price on them. may just have him do the whole build, he's into 700's and can get McM's wholesale I believe. went to a family reunion last summer and fingered a .308 he built that shoots about .2 moa. well for him it does anyway.....

thanks for the offer on the .280 brass, i'll get in touch if i go that route.

The .257 Roy and AI are about neck & neck (100fps +/-) with the Roy getting the nod in velocity the Bob is a good 300fps slower with the 117gr or 120gr. Keep in mind though that the Ackley does it in a short action with 10-15grs. less powder then the Roy.

My Montana is a .325 and shoots sub MOA as did my last Kimber. I shoot a .338, .325WSM and a Rem Mtn in .375 ouch and ouch so aside from the other many rifles I own I NEED a light sheep/deer rifle since I have the medium bore thing covered.

If I go the 7-08 route I'll look hard at 120 TSX and if I go the .257AI I'll look hard at the 100TSX.

My .308 is my "camp/truck" gun and is an 18 1/2" M1A with a ten or 30rd mag and 165gr Sierra Gameking (open sights of course).

thanks for the info. i've read about some inconsistancies w/ the Montana's as far as accuracy goes, glad to hear you got a good shooter.

Man am I out of date or what. Maybe no one shoots 30-06, 308, 7mm Rem. or 30-30 anymore. All this talk of calibers I've never heard of makes me feel old.

And I'm not old! That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Oh, and that woman from Texas is right about the 2nd Amendment. Every informed person would know that. Sorry about her parents and her gun being in her car. Sounds like she coulda' woulda' made a difference.

Sorry Salmo I've never heard of any of those dinosaurs......<wink> a 30 ought what.......

.....and yer kinda' old...sorta'

Kidding of course I've 2 Rem 788's in 30-30 and they will shoot circles around most rifles produced today. At least at 30-30 ranges of 250 or less.

"At least at 30-30 ranges of 250 or less." 250 what? My longest blacktail shot was a 30-30 at 90', which had a lot to do with switching to archery. In brushy western WA, you don't get many shots at a significant distance. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold my Wing recurve.

250 Centimeters...........jeez yer old. blush

Actually my 788 was bought for me in Apache Junction Arizona by my Grandpa and in the Arizona desert a young boy is only limited by the number of rounds he carrys. Close shots became de'rigeur (sp) so I learned to pop prickly pear buds at crazy distances off hand.....game was shot closer.

I do appreciate the challenge of hunting our west slope jungles and just returned from the willow and alder thickets of Alaska where 90' would have been a clearcut. But just bein' there is the most important aspect for me.

SG my favorite rifle is my Weatherby in .270 winchester. Ever heard of that caliber? You strike me as a possible Jack O'Conner fan....

Only two exotics I own are a .458 Socom and the 6.8 SPC. I'm thinking of the .25 WSSM, or the .243 WSSM.

If it has to be on an AR platform, then a .300whisper might be interesting...assuming you already have a handfull of more traditional choices and want something different.

.243 AI doesn't fit into and AR-15, but it would fit in an AR-10.

I have enough big guns, and the AR platform is inherantly accurate. Of 4 AR uppers, all shoot sub 0.5" at 100 yards, and two uppers I assembled myself for $395 and $500 respectively. The others were assembled by custom shops and cost $700 and $1200. Funny how mine shoot just as well as theirs.

The guy who built my .458 upper also has a line of .308 Win based cartridges called the "Rhinos". He does whispers and other neat things, but I want an upper I can assemple myself.

LoweDown,

I grew up reading Jack O'Conner. Yes I recall the 270 Win, but have only seen them (like most guns and calibers) but never fired them. I haven't been hunting in well over 30 years, since I discovered fly fishing. Only guns I ever had were a .22 rifle and revolver, 30-30 Win, and a shotgun, Stevens I think. I used to want one of those military surplus Swedish or Italian 6.5 mm carbines, cuz several writers suggested that they were built on good actions and made excellent sporterized deer rifles. A neighbor kid down the road got into gunsmithing, and I went off to college and discovered fly fishing and unintentionally stopped hunting. Every now and again I get the urge, but then I read a story like Keith's elk hunt and remember that every time you get an animal on the ground, hunting becomes a lot like work. Fooling trout with a fly and then letting them go is morally reprehensible to some people, but it sure is a lot tidier, and if I do keep a couple, they're not too heavy to carry home.

Retarded? Why don't you enlighten me and the rest of the board as to how I am retarded? Toad, er, Todd, why do you always resort to name calling? And Baker? Who asked you to chime in with your Simpsons inspired vitriol? Seems Baker is lacking in the yeast department, and as a result cannot get a rise? So Toad, er, Todd, being a Dem, isn't it "politcally incorrect" to be throwing such terms around so loosely? With your head in the sand, I guess it does'nt matter what you say because you don't have to stand up to the scrutiny that the flagrant use of such lables passes behind you? DUCK AND COVER!!!!! And as for Baker, he comes off as nothing more than unleavened bread.
