Snake:

I just had a trip cancellation for next week. Give me a call and I will show you how to fish a Dick Nite.

(Note: Snake and I have fished the Snohomish together for many years. He almost always uses a Dick Nite with a reasonable length leader and no flossing . I often fish a jig or cast plugs. Both are almost impossible to floss with. We both get our share of fish.)

IMHO there is no reason for a leader more than four feet long. The river is seldom crystal clear and a DN will have a great action on a shorter leader, so what is the purpose of a 6-8 foot leader?

this is for all u guys that think that if u have them hooked in the nose or the tounge your not flossing. i have flossed hundreds of hoes on yarn and dick nites . when u tell people to keep the dick nite on the bottom and reel slow in a deep hole with little to no current, wtf? that is flossin 101 man. then tell them to swing it threw a flat on the bottom? another flossing tech. and facts are fish bite yarn to. You dont make all your glo bugs thinking ya this is a great flossing color. and the smaller the lure or hook the better it is for flossing. and the way a fish hits it or flosses it is not a tick tick its a solid take rod bends hard. line slides hook into fish could be snout could be corner could be tounge depends on size of lure. then u get slammed after hook alrety slid into fish cause he is trying to run away. that is flossing not tick tick .. jerk . tick tick jerk is called snaggin intentionaly. same goes for when u let it out the back of the boat in the holder. I have seen many fish fouled that way to. i agree that flossing is not truley sportsman type fishing. but some people like to eat fish.

Obvious troll. Not a very good one, either. But, I'll give him one more shot:

Hey J-D, you wanna take a stab at how I flossed this one? rofl

If you target salmon with beads or yarn or beads and yarn with more than a 3-4 foot leader, you're flossing/snagging. It really is that simple.

This is not a flame and I endorse this message grin

If you use lead/slinky with an "eye", a rubber band works really well for your dropper and will break free easily depending on the thickness of the band - you can even "double-up" the thinner rubber bands so you won't break free too often and lose a lot of lead.

There are many things to consider when using Dick Nites.....river current, is the river tidally-influenced, sunny or cloudy day, high water or low water conditions, etc. But my basic Dick Nite set up is as follows:

10# mainline to 3-way "black" swivel. Dropper is either 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2 oz bass casting style sinker on a 12 to 18 inch 5# leader (breaking off this is cheaper than breaking off your lure). My lure leader is 6' of 8# Maxima ultragreen. Keep in mind that when you are reeling in, the dropper runs nearly parallel to your lure leader, so you really only have 4 1/2 to 5' of "clean" leader. I prefer size 1 Dick Nites, usually chartreuse, green or combinations of those with silver. No wee sizes. Sometimes #2 size when river is up.

I like to fish slow-moving flats. No riffles or tailouts. Sometimes a deep pool is good, but flats of 8 to 12 feet deep are ideal. I cast 45 degrees downstream, let the sinker hit bottom(yes, risky), then "swim" the lure back to me. No jerking, no jigging, just a slow methodical retrieve. I don't like to tick the bottom, but rather visualize the spoon fluttering about 3' off the bottom. To know the right speed of retrieve, start your day with a short cast of 20 feet and reel the spoon in. Watch what speed you use to make the Dick Nite just flutter..........no spins, that's too fast.

When a salmon(I've caught coho, chum, king, and pink on Dick Nites) bites the spoon, you'll know. A$$ cracking, not a tick-tick floss thing. Good luck.

Snake

How's that Rocket Red?

That's awesome!

The way you wrote it, I can picture 15 places on my favorite river that I could try it. I don't anchor up that much (read: ever) when I'm tossing for silvers, but I might try it a few times this fall.

This has been hands-down one of the most informative threads I have ever read on this BB. Kudos to everyone.

I'm going to get my DNs out of rust pile and try them again here in a few days. Thanks again all!

J-D you expsed yourself as a Troll when you considered it flossing with the lure hanging out the back of the boat. You might have been able to hang with a little more tact, but that pushed you over the edge. Sorry.
